yeah that's another reason why I was set on earlier models. it's insane to me that a vehicle that's 20 years old gets better mileage than a new one. ( another example is mileage of 85 honda civic vs a new one. about the same. )

plus, wasn't there a point around 2000 ish where they started being built in mexico rather than germany?

Had a look at my record on "fuelly.com" ( useful site for looking up what sort of mileage people are getting with any type of car you're thinking of buying.)

seems my average since I bought the thing in sept is 57mpg. I can live with that.

I thought all the jetta diesels were still made in Germany.

I see the 2014 jetta has a hybrid option. It gets 4.2 and 4.5 l/100 on premium gas and a 1.4 turbo engine.

Why didn't they put their small diesel in there instead?

I think there is a newer diesel in Germany that is 1.5 liter and gets around 70MPG..:hhmm:

yeah, I heard about that too.

My sister was telling me about a friend of hers that rented a newer vw diesel while touring england.

car full of people and bags, still got over 70 mpg ( so he says).

He got back to canada, and went to the vw dealer to order one, and they couldn't do it... engine not available in N.A.

Best not get into why, it'll just make everyone angry...

but , he was told they'd cheerfully order him a hideously complex hybrid that gets marginally better or the same mileage as their 30 year old diesels..:bang:

well I got my new suspension in from blausport or w/e that site was. Everything fits properly and on the first drive everything seems much better.... no more clunking and no more bouncing for 5 min after hitting a bump... also I can now drive around corners quite nicely.

Aside from having to weld a nut onto the other end of canadian tires lend-a-tool spring compressors everything went really smoothly. Kit came with everything except the 4 bolts that hold the top on of the rear shocks. Easy saturday morning kind of job.

What was the final cost on that Toshi.

Well I found a 96 jetta in awsome shape, it is the red one came posted, pretty much zero rust. So the plan is to gut the car and then transplant everything from the diesel, I dont want a hatchet job. If you guys come across any useful sites with info let me know. I'll try to post the project as I go.

that tdi club forum has a section on swaps. Some of the threads go into a lot of detail.

The thread where the guy is putting one into an old BMW 2002 is very cool. http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=359959&highlight=bmw

gives a person ideas...:hhmm:

Hit 150,000kms today.
Oh and the trip odo was reset when it was last filled. Sure wish my truck would do more than 500kms on 1/2 a tank.

Also,"C" pillar leak fix seems to have worked. :)

Heh..think mine hit 150k in the 90's....

My only interesting moment lately was driving down the highway passing a garbage truck ,and seeing a large bolt fall off it and come hurtling and bouncing down the road towards me...

it bounced under the car thankfully.. and not through the windshield into my brain, but it sounded like I ran over a landmine when it hit the bottom of the car.

Kinda freaky . Kept waiting for my fuel gauge to drop or a flat tire.

I get 1000 average with a mix of town and hill plagued hiway(ish) driving. Thats also with "venting" the tank.

I think it is great that we cruiser folk all like vws I have a 04 tdi jetta.Had it since 06.I love it,peppy, safe, reliable and great mileage. Other than a glow plug(recall) and roof drain(recall) no real issues Just did the tbelt last week.Did the water pump and idler at the same time. Also this is a good time to clean out the intake as they clog up and get smaller and smaller thus your mileage will suffer.
Just sold that jhd81 I had for sale,it is going south.

I filled up last night, 1180kms on the tank.

Do you drive like an asshat or something? :flipoff2:

Seriously, I drive like a little ole lady, shift at 2thousand:meh:....

Round town I can get about 750, highway around 950..
