vent your tank,

clean out your intake system and block off that EGR.
Should help things out considerably.
I saw my buddies mom's TDI had a severly clogged intake from EGR build up.
Couldn't believe the amount of s*** in there (i posted it on here in the past I think November or December)

yeah my buddy did his intake ( 02 jetta) last summer. unbelievable how much s*** was in there. Literally a bucketfull.

I got a sackfull of receipts with mine from the past ten years, and intake cleaning was on there, but about 5 or 6 years ago now...so it's probably filling up again.

As long as the mileage stays the same I'll leave it tho I think.

What I really need to do is figger out a manual boost controller , so I can get rid of the pulsing when I floor it. The real problem is something called an n75 valve, but apparently the ol' bolt and spring solves the problem forever, not just until another $100 valve s***s the bed.

The wife's car got some love today. Fuel filter, oil change, air filter and a tire rotation. Tried to chase down a suspected boost leak but couldn't find one..... so thats good.

Anyway, the thing is, the car (2005 TDI Golf) needs rear brakes... (again)
I think the callipers are sticking even though one has been replaced the last time I did the rear brakes. Last brake job included pads and rotors (one calliper) which are all now buggered after aprox. 20,000K.

Found these guys which have had good prices in the past.... Any of you got any suggestions.

I got mine from rockauto.... prices were good as always... I got the rotors/akebono pads.

Look like good prices...pretty short life on those rear pads..

Just did the fronts last night, can hear the backs squealing..

I took the calipers right apart and cleaned and lubed them, no corrosion inside the cylinders, seals looked ok. Looked like they had just thrown a set of pads in and they had worn very very unevenly..

Me thinks it was the lack of cleaning rusty surfaces and lubing plus pulling slider pins and lubing..We will see..

Even pulled the bleeders and cleaned and lubed with brake stuff...

So my niece has her eye on a jetta in vic.

Its an auto, which to me is vile, but then its not like I'll be driving it.

Are vw automatics known for being pieces of s*** ? seems when I look online there's a lot for sale with new trannies which isn't a great sign.

Cam claims the autos are shiat.

I did? I mean in my eyes all autos are sh*t but I don't know much about the VW ones specifically.

Yeah kinda my opinion too.

Only reason to drive an auto is if you're too inept or crippled to drive a stick.

all I can really do is try to see if its crap. she knows squat about cars but if its a teenage boy selling the car she'll probably get a good deal. Thankfully my nieces look nothing like me.

(Lau, I may think guns are the province of inbred retards but I'm not above kneecapping with a nice piece of rebar. Just sayin.)

We have a Jetta tdi. It has the DSG auto. I was very skeptical about buying the auto but my wife was insistent.

The research I did on TDIClub.com showed several problems with the DSG and very expensive fixes.

But....its got almost 200K on it and we haven't had a problem yet.

I don't like the lag when I hit the accelerator pedal though. It takes some getting used to.

I also think it costs about 10% in fuel consumption.

Lucky I'm an ocean away... you had to know this was coming.

That said, what year is the VW's she is looking at? I had an old auto one... didn't explode but it drove like crap (3speed auto or something back in early 90's)

It's just a 96 jetta. I think it's blue, lots of pics on used vic. :flipoff2:

Not even diesel...but it does fit the #1 criteria, in that it's 1300 bucks. I'm going to try to get her to look at a 5 speed diesel jetta that's 1500, with a new clutch etc, but she's kinda stubborn. ( must have licked that trait off a stone, can't be hereditary.)

It's cheap enough that it's not the end of the world if it blows up in 6 months, but it would be nice if it lasted a bit longer than that.

A teenager's first car is supposed to be a cheap piece of s*** right? (mine certainly was...$600 1972 beetle.)

If it was 6 months from now, I'd just give her my passat, but I kinda need it at the moment.

When I was looking for one, just like you said the autos have multiple issues and it is all over the internet. So you take your chance with the auto and hope you dont have to fix it. Even the cheap red one I picked up had auto tranny issues.

Just installed a double din Kenwood stereo, never treated myself to such a luxury...:p

Like Potatoe, its pretty much sold...Never keep vehicles for long except my BJ42..

Ahhh... Hello.... Spell check? The official term and correct spelling is: "Lau-ball".

indeed. You'd think if anyone could spell it, it'd be young toshi.

Anyone feel like taking a cheap jetta for a burn tomorrow, or in the next few days?
its on cedar hill. I don't really want to go back to vic tomorrow to look at it...I'd rather eat some chicken wings and watch some fooseball.
