I have an 85 fj60. Gas factory carburated engine. Charge light came on, battery checks out OK. Auto zone says this truck has a voltage regulator separate from the alternator.

Can anyone confirm this and if it exists what is the location?

I cannot find it anywhere.

I have a 1984, gas factory, etc.

My voltage regulator is mounted on the alternator. Held on with two Phillips head screws. It's just a little thing. Visible and easily removable with the alternator installed.

Show us a picture of it :)

There were several different alternators over the years that the 60 series was made. I cant remember exactly what years had what VR setups, but im pretty sure the separate VR were used on the 62.

On my '86 its bolted to the top of the alternator and looks like a rectanglar plate with two screws holding on. If yours looks the same, then its not the kind with the separate VR.

My '85 looks just like Machinists.

So does mine. It's easy to replace, and cheap. When they do go out, it's sudden, so I carry a spare.

Is that a replacement alternator? Iirc, mine looks like that but instead of at the 10:00 position my VR is at the 2:00 position.

Will ck it again in the daylight. Autozone has 2 different VRs that are for our trucks. Nothing's easy. Not even the easy stuff.

There are 2 VRs for the 60 2F:

27700-38100-84: this is the one bolted to the alternator itself.

27700-60100-84: this is the earlier "separate" VR from the ALT.

If you have a stock alternator, there are your two choices.

You have the part numbers. Any Toyota dealership can get them for you or any competent aftermarket parts house can cross reference them for you.

Good luck.

I have never seen a separate VR on a US FJ60. If it exists, it's on the very early ones that lacked A/C and possibly power steering. They may not even exist but they are described in the FSM.

What Andy said as well. I have not seen a separate VR for a US market 60 2F either.

That said, the part number is live and available through Toyota.
