anybody have the capability to transfer vhs to either dvd or usb? i have a tape with a few clips on it that i would like to transfer over to my computer

X2 best way to do that .. ? I still have and old ( obviously ) Sony at home that was working ok last time that I check ..

As retro's article states, you either need to get an analog to digital converter to plug a VCR into your computer - or find someone who can do it for you. If it is just one tape, it could be easier to have it done. Some of the local photo shops around here will do it for you. If you have a bunch of tapes, pick up a converter and do it yourself.

I picked one up online for about $12. the transfer quality is ok, but I'm sure if my original tape was better the end result would have been better. On a copy of a tape from a VHS camcorder, quality was not bad. Quality from a purchased movie was not as good, but watchable. I don't know if the more expensive converters they sell at Best Buy and the like would do any better, I wasn't willing to spend $50-70 on one just to do a few transfers.

The one I bought is called "EasyCap" and comes with the software to transfer and edit to digital. I don't remember exactly where I got it, but a quick search shows the current edition at Amazon for about $8. That is cheaper than having a transfer done, and for that price, I figure it is worth taking a chance.

I have a converter but it's a pain to use.
Doesn't Costco do that for cheap now?
Good thing is that the resolution of VHS is so bad by today's standards that it doesn't matter much how well it's done... :)

any chance to show the results .?

It's as easy as it looks to use .. just plug in to your VHS and put the other end to your USB port at your laptop ..?

yeah, pretty much. the software needs to installed before you plug it in. The editing software and transfer process take a little getting used to, but no more difficult than photoshop elements.

this clip of my Grandma was transferred from a VHS that was recorded with a VHS camcorder. I wrote "master copy" on the label, so it must be the original, not one of the copies I made for family.

The full video was about an hour. I did the transfer of the tape and edited it for DVD copies with their software. I also pulled this clip as a sneak preview that I sent to family.

in the customer reviews on amazon there is a pretty good step by step on installing the software. there are a couple of important things you dont want to miss. (currently, it is the 3rd review down)
