Ha, now if you REALLY want to be horrified...one of those is what my dad traded one of these for.

That is just nuts! Hard to believe those cars were anything near on par at one point in time. Your dad was on the right end of that deal.

Haha, just so long as you don't look up what those things are worth now. :bang:

I never missed the back seat for a second tho. Even with my narrow 14 year old ass it was uncomfortable. If you've ever been in an original vw beetle's back seat, it was ****ing luxury compared to the two metal ass dents in the back of that thing.

Loved this engine more than any other normally aspirated motor I've had. Designed by Yamaha, and way ahead of it's time. Limited to 7300rpm, but capable of 8500rpm. Made 220hp back in 1989. Amazing for a 3.0 displacement motor back then. Sounded heavenly at WOT.

Wasn't much a fan of the car it was in though.... Didn't have it for long, as my sister borrowed it and got rear-ended. Wrote the thing off. :meh:

Working on this motor was another story. Took me 24 hours to do timing belt, water pump and valve cover gaskets etc.. Soooooo tight in that engine bay, and the heads on this motor are super wide (high flo).

Hmmm....well, on the slightly side tracked topic of favorite engines.... This is what I'd swapped into that black MR2. JDM late model 1.6 supercharged (4AGZE). I increased boost (bigger crank pulley), installed a re-programmed ECU, header, exhaust, intercooler, etc. Made about 200hp/200lb/ft to the wheels....in a car that weighed 2200lb. Went like stink. Engine had a really broad torque band. Was so much fun. And still got 35mpg (Imp) on the highway.

I occasionally had thoughts of finding a 3sgte for my celica, but after that drive in to work tonight, I'm pretty ok with driving a lumbering dinosaur that isn't low to the ground and has really good lighting.

It was vile out. Celica would've been part submarine hydroplaning if I went over 80kph ( plus the lights may have been whale oil candles in that ****ing thing.)

Nice!

I always thought cruisers had glow worms in jam jars for headlights.
Haha, one of the things I like about the 61/62 front clip with the 4 headlights. Especially when high beams are on and all 4 are lit.

24 volts doesn't hurt either. :grinpimp:

Also finally got around to reconnecting my aux led a****** lights on the front bumper yesterday.

the drive has been so murky lately they fill in the gaps pretty well.

Probably sucks to be oncoming traffic tho...

Somehow and I’m not quite sure why but round headlights are still better!

Hella Euro pattern lights + Phillips H4-XU-LED

low beam position at 7am
Halogen 55/60w

Note the slightly illuminated bush across road.

Next up XU-LED 25/25w
E721E052-6900-4A90-9D97-DCA3FAD521B9.jpeg

just a tad brighter. Still the same clean cutoff lines.

I’ve always found 7” rounds to be better...
these are in large rectangular lights.

40 series, round headlights, upgraded relays & wiring = plenty of light. I’d imagine that if Halogen are plenty bright, that the same LED bulbs would be crazy bright.

BTW, Currently on sale at Lordco. In case you’re shopping for a stocking stuffer.

That is a pretty impressive difference.

I just like the 61 clip because on high beams all 4 lights are on and it is seriously bright as hell. Low beam is probably about the same as a similar watted round headlight. The little leds I added to the bumper point out to the sides a bit so they light up the deer eyeballs sooner, and that white led light seems to cut a little better.

My 40 series headlights are h4 but not terribly impressive, but then I think I've only driven it in the middling dark once, haven't needed them really yet.

The meat plow has about 50 light attachement tabs on it, so I'll add something at some point...to further digress Nick's thread

I miss this Beast!
We had many great adventures in this.
Sweet! I am a Van person too! I regret selling my ‘72 Econoline.

I have to agree with you there. I love the cruiser for winter driving. So much better visibility, and the weight keeps it planted. I really disliked my low light little sports cars in winter. (Summer was another story tho.)

Practically speaking I should really get a cheap little commuter for the daily grind, but I just can't stand the thought of headlights in my mirrors and no visibility beyond the car in front of me. So, will keep racking up the hours on the LJ.

I went to Phillips H4 LED's a couple years ago and couldn't be happier. People who say LEDs suck need to try the real thing and not the Chinese crap on Ebay. The Phillips LED lamps are a great investment. Lordco carries them. It takes a little bit to adjust to the whiter light, but once you do there is no going back. I can't stand driving anything with halogen anymore - feel like I'm blind. I find the LED light reflects way better off signs etc. too.

The Phillips LED's place the elements exactly in the same spot as halogen bulb filaments, so the light pattern is basically identical. Other big advantage I found is the reduced draw in current. More power into light, less into heat (easier on my old toyota low amp alternator). Only downside with that is snow can build up on the outside of the housing instead of melting away. So keep some old halogens handy... Not that it's much of an issue on VI.

It's all good; sometimes the side tracked threads are the best ones!

Yeah I've stopped worrying about the hours piling up. What am I saving it for? ****it, drive it into the ground.

Plus the insurance on a commuter is worth more than any depreciation and upkeep. . Tho a little bomber for summer would be fun.... If they gave a break on insurance for a second efficient commuter car I'd be all in.

Might have to try the LEDs. My 61 came with headlight squirters. I took them out because the relay would stick sometimes, but it'd cure the cool snow buildup issue.

@andybudge the correct response to this is, " oh you're Canadian? Do you know Doug?"

Well, someone in the states asked me the same thing once, about someone in Canada and it
turned out I did know the guy. I kinda narrowed it down to Perth, seems like the land cruiser
crowd know each other there. I know Tim knows the only other three people I know in Perth.

Now I just have to figure out what’s up with the power going to the headlights. Yesterday after putting them in, they seemed to be working great. High, Low, Driving with High... all as they should.

Great, I thought, let’s go for a spin. Turn the ignition to on and ignition and off go the headlights. As soon as the engine started they’re back on. Only thing is that Low Beam position is DRL (dim high beams) and High Beam is High beams... but no blue indicator light.

Jumped in the other car and left it behind, I now need to poke around and figure out why Halogen work great all the time, and LED stop working after turning on the ignition.

Trouble shooting list goes... grounds, fuses, relays, power. The wiring diagram Doesnt reveal any secrets... basic switches and no computers.

Now I just need the pinch in my back to let up and then I can figure out what went wrong... perhaps it’s talk of the “Lucas intermittent electron” or that it’s not a Toyota.

The LEDs are on sale at Lordco for $100 BTW.
