i have a 3vf e and was wondering about info on setting the valves i heard that it's shims but are you supposed to measure the cam's to figure out your spacing.

I've done several valve adjustments on these engines. It's a royal PITA. Yes, there are shims in buckets that sit on top of the valves. You set the cams at TDC, then run a feeler gauge between the cam and the shim, check the gap. If its out of spec, then you pull the shim out and put a different one in. There's a big chart in the FSM that shows you how to go up/down in thickness so you get it right.

What I like to do is check them ALL, write everything down, then mix and match the shims to get as many valves back to spec as you can. Then I run down to the closest dealer and buy the shims I need, they usually have a complete selection in a plastic fishing tackle type box.

You need a micrometer to measure them as you take them out. Getting them out is a HUGE pain, easier with 2 people. There is a SST made for getting them out, but I always use a prybar and a magnet.

Put new gaskets on the valve covers when you re-install them.
