I am having some trouble reinstalling the timing belt after a head gasket installation. I have the shop manual and have tried following the procedure but cant get the marks to line up. I have the solid mark on the timing belt lined up with the mark on the crank gear. The engine is at TDC on the compression stroke. The shop manual says to run the belt around the water pump pulley and then run it toward the drivers side cam pulley. Next turn the driver camshaft pulley clockwise slightly and then install the belt so the mark on the belt lines up with the camshaft alignment mark. I cannot get this part to work. It almost seems as if the belt is too tight. This is the belt that was originally on the engine so I know it fits. I've tried different combinations of changing crank alignment and the camshaft pulley alignment and I am always off by on or two teeth on the cam pulley. If anyone has better way that works please let me know.

Thanks,

Joe

IIRC, not only can you use a pry bar and push the TB tensioner back in, and reinstall the grenade pin:D

But you can also loosen the two bolts that hold it in. Do not remove them, but rather just scoot the TB tensioner back to gain you even more room.

Again, IIRC b/c it's been a LONG time...

EDIT: Or maybe it was just loosen the two TB tensioner bolts...

Can't recall if I actually needed to reload the tensioner or not...

And PS the old girl is a negative interference motor... Do not worry about the valves hitting the pistons...

Well, unless the heads have been substantially milled... Deck/ de decked..

Is the tensioner still installed? Did you compress it and put the pin (I use a finish nail) in to hold it compressed?

Are you sure the solid line should be down by the crank? I did a new TB on our Highlander last month, and the lines for the cam pulleys were solid but the line for the crank was dashed.

I would never re-install a used timing belt, unless maybe if it had <10K miles on it. They are only good for 60K, so I'd be getting a new one.

X2, and I would not use any belt except for a Toyota belt.

I wouldn't care how much cheaper it was after market...

I would use a Toyota belt only.

What I usually do is install the belt onto the crank shaft, and put the big timing belt washer, plastic cover and harmonic balancer back on so you can look at the timing mark, not try to cram your head and a flashlight down in front of the engine to see the mark on the crank shaft...

Once that's on, I turn the crankshaft counter clockwise from TDC to help get the room to get the belt onto the drivers side properly, then turn the pass side cam clockwise to get the belt onto it if I need, then down and around the tensioner.

I usually turn the engine over 2,4, or 6 times to make sure the marks all stay where they should.... I don't usually bother with marking the belt, or getting the factory marks on the belt to line up... The important marks are on the crank, and cams...
