I posted a thread about gear ratio's a few weeks ago. And got some great info with 2 really good links.

571 gear strength
Erik's Toyota Differential info

I decided to go to the local U-pull-it yard. Got a 94 V6 auto 3rd with 3.90 gear ratio , , F***. :bang:

But the cool thing is it did not cost much , , I have a 94 pickup 22re with 33'' tires and a SAS I get 14mpg average with stock 4.10 gears !!!!WOW!!!! I DO plan to get 35''-37'' tires in the near future. SO I plan now to re gear that 3rd with 5.29's and a locker of some type..

So any suggestions would be great

Or what should I look for when gettin a junk yard 3rd? I want a V6 3rd so it is more beefy. I would take a stock 4.88 geared chunk and use it for a while till I can get the 3.90 chunk geared (the 4.88 will not take aftermarket suport check out the link Erik's Toyota Differential info )

I dono:beer::beer::beer::beer::beer:

You know you need to regear the front and rear at the same time with a 4x4 right? So go find a spare IFS front diff, and regear it and the V6 chunk to 5.29, then put them in. Don't go looking for a set of stock 4.88's, do it once and do it right.

IFS chunk wont fit in the front of a SFA and right now I need more drive ability the front drive shaft is to short after the SAS so its not even in yet I just need the back geared first so I can get around town more easy

I'd like to do it right but the funds are not there yet a lil at a time step by step.

If I really want to play I'll use the 1 ton Jeep in the shed  But I am a Yota man at heart, SO the Toyota build began

just get 2 v6 3rds (non 4.88, if you want 5.29's), drive them around til you can afford the 5.29 gears, then put them in.....im not sure what you are asking.

As for gear manufacturers, me and some of my buddies have gone through SEVERAL R&P and the general concensous if Motive Gear is the only one worth a s***

I'd put small tires on it till I could regear.... or just deal with the "won't pull a flea of a dogs back"

Do the rear 1st, then you can throw that one in and drive it with the big tires until you can get to the front.

Or find a cheap 4:88 for the rear and ride on it till you get the other diffs done.

Motive Gear it is then, Thanks.

G254 is that in the vin or just somewhere on the info tag? I looked on mine I saw a code that resembled that kinda in the bottom right corner, is that where it would be?

Sorry I know my question was kinda questionable lol. It was late and happy hour a the local Wing House is fun :beer::beer::beer::beer::beer:

I really just wanted to now how to tell what gear ratio that 3rd is gonna have before I pull it ? 4.56 is better than what I have now and I could re gear it when I have the money that seems like the best choice, is G254 and yellow paint the only way to tell?

The next time I go in the junk yard I just want to be more prepared and know what to look for. Thanks

That was another thought I had, to use the 4.88 gears but how can I tell if its going to be 4.88's I read somewhere white paint? but how else can I tell

If the diff is out of the axle, mark the ring gear and carrier bearing next to it. Also mark the pinion flange, and the diff housing. Now spin the pinion flange, counting each full turn. You want to give the ring gear 1 full complete rotation, counting the turns of the pinion.

If its still in the axle, do the same thing, but marking the drum brake and backing plate. Spin the drum 2 full turns, have someone else hold the other side to keep it from turning. And once again, count how many times the pinion turns. If its on the truck, just jack up one of the rear tires, and spin that tire around twice.

Where are you? I have a 4:88 but it's in a Taco (NON TRD) rear end... I think like 2 studs won't line up or have to be moved, or something like that...

x2 on the white paint... And turn 2x and count the pinion...

you can also count the pinion teeth and ring teeth (pinion teeth/ring teeth = gear ratio)

Yes 4.88 is white paint and the door code is....actually i have no idea. But my 92 was originally 4.88's so i can check.

the taco 3rd (wrongly refered to as the 8.4) wont fit in a normal early 8" axle housing.

Erik's Toyota Differential info In this link it states the '86-95 4cyl Turbo and V6* trucks and 4runners, and ALL '96+ 4Runners use the Toyota 8" 4-pinion differential in the rear. This diff is known as the "V6/Turbo diff."

so is the Taco 3rd different but the newer 4runner is the same as the older years?

I remember seeing a 97 4runner with a 3rd in it at the junk yard when I was there but I didnt take it, would it be worth going to look at again? Is this a year model 4runner that could have what I need?

yes the later/3rd gen 4runner diffs will work. the 3rds that dont work in your housing are refered to (by toyota IIRC) as the 8.4. It has a different bolt pattern and I think 2 more bolts. if the 3rd is out of the axle you can see that it has gurdles across the ring gear.

i dont know for sure, but i assume at some point the 4runner also switched over to the 8.4, but dont quote me i dont know

If this is what you're talking about...

That would be the T-100/ Tundra... And there is NO way to put one of those diffs in a Mini housing...

Well... There is, but you'd have to be a master fabber and forget throwing a Mini back into it.

The R&P is also @ $900 from Toyota last I checked. I think their gear is unique and can't be fitted to a V6 mini, can't remember.

semi... My Downey cat says 4:87.

That was the gear my T100 had.

.................EDITED: Head explody......................

Will the Taco diff I have fit into ffYoya's truck?

IF YOU WANT, ffYota... Pay the shipping two and fro, and I'll loan it to you... I have NO IDEA how much it would be... And it's not you'd be missing something or have something of great value... They're pretty much useless diffs.
