using washers to offset shackles?

my montero has rear shackles very similar to the 1st generation toyota front shackles, with the offset because the frame is wider than the spring eyelet. I have lift shackles that I want to use on my montero, but they are not offset, could I just stack some washers on either side of the spring eyelet to compensate for the difference in width? Is this a terribly unsafe idea? I don't see how the strength is compromised at all, but then again, what do I know...

oh yea, it looks like it would be less than 1/2" of washers on either side of the spring eyelet to bring it to the same width as the frame.

That's a bad idea I'd say. You're moving the weight of the vehicle from the ends of the bolt, right at the shackle body to the middle of the bolt, where some sag and fatigue will likely occur. Maybe resulting in failure... I'd either try to have them modified so they are offset, or go with something else. Better safe than sorry!

Shackles are cheap. Call Budbuilt, buy a set. It's not worth the risk.

The shackles you are talking about will flex under side loads and cause the bushing on your springs to wear...the springs will quickly cut into the bolt and weaken it. I am using some cheap "lift shackles" on my rear and the bushings are about gone after a few months. I am going to find a way to brace them from shifting so much.
