Im not too familar witht the sensors on a BJ70. Does it have a separate water sedimenter next to the fuel filter that maybe needs emptying?

Your oil pressure sounds ok.It only has 5psi at idle. At 2000 rpm it would be about half way maybe more.

There is a whole range of things that can make your starts harder.
The glow plugs are usually the 1st thing you look at.

The oil and soot can be part of a glow plug problem or maybe the injectors are due for a rebuild.
The rough running can also be from the glow plugs not working on all 4 cyl.

If the engine has high klms it going to be a little smoky and rougher at start up than new as the compression drops off but check the easy cheap things 1st.

is your BJ70 a rotory pump or an inline pump?
if it is an inline then you have a water seperator about half way back ont eh frame that might need draining...
of you might have a connector loose?

I think you should try to get a workshop manual and get to know the diesel better when you can but you are at the right place to get answers for it. Look at getting an after market Temperature and oil pressure gauge as the standard Toyota gauges are unreliable. It sounds like you need to go through your glowplug system and make sure they are all working like Ross said.A manual will give all the readings and make it easy. Don't worry about the mark on the snow this may correct itself if the glowplugs are functioning correctly as they create a hot spot to help the diesel combust when the engine is cold. If it continues after the plugs are working properly you will have to look at the injectors as they may not have been serviced for some time and the spray pattern may be poor or even leaking and no real pattern to the spray. Is the aircleaner clean and not clogged?Apart from that you will learn as you go like the rest of us.cheers
