Got the springs from Photoman today. They look NEW Thanks
The front springs are taged L and R.
Is there a L and R for the rear?
Do I need to remove the shocks to just swap out the springs?
$300+ for shocks! They cust more than the springs.
Are they made of gold?
No way at this time I can get them.
What cheapo shocks can I get, OEM or should I get a firmer shock with all the add weight I have
I am leaning towards the Monroe GasMagnums.
If they are the same as the ones I had many years ago they are very firm, have a positive pressure (thay push up on the suspension) and cheap.
Had them on my HiLux 4x4 Xcabs (wish I didn't) as they made the ride VERY FIRM. I think that is what I need for my overweight rig.
just follow the instructions off slee's site. It mentions that the rotor will need a minimum of 12" clearance. I only had 10" and didn't have a problem putting on my OME's , so I doubt you will have an issue.
no need for the compression tool, my came right out with no effort.
get a nut splitter it really saved me time and effort.
I don't know if I will have the shocks when I do the springs.
I might see how the ride is with the new springs, then if I need a HD shock then I will go with the Gas Magnum.
Does anyone the cheapest place to get the OME shocks. I found them for $71.90/each. I did them a couple of years ago on a different cruiser but they were a ton cheaper. Is the caster correction kit a MUST? If so how difficult it is to do? Thanks for any insight.
Give the guys at Slee off-road a call. Their price won't be the cheapest but it will be the best value. They can also help you with your questions about the caster correction bushings. In general, if you are lifting the truck 2" or more then you need to adjust the caster in some manner; usually with the correction bushings. That doesn't have anything to do with the shocks though.
If you're doing more than 4" lift then search for Brian's posts (bjowett) on his caster mods. His mod requires cutting and welding but it's ingenious.
They also have a complete write-up on their web site with pictures and instructions on how to do the bushings. Another advantage of buying from Christo is that he supplies a bushing removing/installation tool with his kits.
If you're looking for more details on *why* the bushings are necessary then search here in the 80 archives for a post by Cruiserdan. He measured the alignment before and after the bushings and posted the details. Advanced search w/keywords "caster bushings" author=Cruiserdan, 80 Section.
Your rear axle bump stops (mounted to the frame) should have a metal base and a rubber bumper that contacts the axle housing on full compression.
The 93's and early 94's got the same style bump stops above the front axle. All other years have nothing up front (other than the snubbers inside the front coil springs.)
Here is a pic of the bumpstops off a FJ62. Yours should basically look like these.
Bad things can happen if your rubber is missing! I'm sorry to hear that you were practicing unsafe axle movement.
<Rears are LH RH also. The taller one goes on the LH side.>
How do I tell the rear springs apart?
They look the same length.'
The only marking on them is one has two pink paint spots and one yellow.
The other has three light green paint spots.
Kurt,
The front bump stops will look like the pics posted by Photoman. The rears are shorter and the metal plate on the bottom (top?) is completely flat.
2 pink paint spots means the springs are defective. Three light green paint spots means the springs only work above 3000' in elevation or on Wednesdays. Any time you see a yellow paint spot it cancels out the other colors. HTH.
I installed the front springs, boy was that easy! No problem at all. Don't know it the shocks are orignial or not but the pass side is ok and the driver side is leaking but still holds pressure.
Now that I jinx my self, I bet the rears will be a PITA.
I gained a 1/2" at first (with empty gas tank) and now, after driving (with full tank)my gain is 1/4"
Thats great. Now if those Enzite pills would work that good
I measured the rear springs and they are the same length.
How do I tell the left from right.
