I've used the Toyota paper gaskets on mini truck axles front and rear with no sealer, well prepped and never had a problem.
On my Isuzu, the FSM recommends RTV and no gasket is present or available. Since not all the Isuzu Three Bond sealants are available, I use Gray RTV and have never had an issue. I switched from Permatex to Versa Chem because the Permatex always dried up the next time I tried to use it where the Versa Chem doesnt unless it gets really old.
One time I had an emergency and had to throw the diff back in with the gray RTV, skinned for 10 min and dry for 15. Filled it up with gear oil and drove 2000 miles without event or leak.
