Bought my 97 in 2005 with 70K miles and now have 155K miles. No mechanicl problems yet (full preventive maintenance always done) and feel it is time to replace. I'm not sure the 100 series is as good so what is the general feeling of mebers. Is it time to move to a say 2002 100 series? Maybe this should be a poll?

You are not going to have a lot of love in this section with that question. If it has lockers I say sell me the axles and part out the rest of the truck.

Or just sell it to someone that wants it. :meh:

Edit: Many here including myself do not see the 100 series as an upgrade.

If you only wheel light to moderate trails once or twice a year the 100 is an upgrade. Otherwise you're just shooting yourself in the foot.

So- how do you use your 80?

My dad used to say that "The devil you know..... " you know the rest. You might be trading a well maintained vehicle for a basket case. Also, don't ever trade a paid off vehicle for a car payment. Bad ju-ju.

Sell 80 now get 100 ASAP
:)

I have both. For wheeling keep the '97.
Riding down the highway, the 2002 is a joy.

I drive the 2001 and my son drives the 96. We each prefer the one we drive.

You need a commuter vehicle if you're driving your 80 21K miles a year.

I had an 80(LX450), wife had a 100 series(LX470), the 100 is a great truck, and much more practical/comfortable for me. I bought an Acura MDX for the wife, and I had a choice of which LX to sell. I still have my LX450. If you can get over the "I wants" (aka: keeping up with the Jonses), you could keep yourself happy, by slowly adding mods/upgrades, keeping up with maintenance. That's what I've been doing anyway... Even with the 80s poor fuel economy, still probably way ahead compared to the cost of a much newer LC.

I agree with everyone above. Not an expert at all, but I do believe its a question of purposes. If you are driving that much, probably highway miles, switch to a 100.

What are you fishing for? You don't give us the info we need to help you answer your question. If you "feel it is time to replace", just do it! Looks like you can't make up your mind and want to be able to blame some one else for your mistake down the line.

Not too sure about that interpretation, just like people disagreed with the one on my bumper thread. I find his question to be totally reasonable. I don't think he is looking for anyone to blame, just getting more opinions on a BIG decision. Why should he "just do it" and buy a 20 thousand dollar vehicle on a whim, without getting all the information? Do you just do everything that you "feel" like doing? Of course not (should say I hope not)

IMO, the whole reason we have forums is to ask questions, discuss and share ideas--not castigate others for asking questions.

Asking an 80s tech thread what they think about "upgrading" to a 100/200 series is like asking ... oh nevermind, this isn't sChat.

He wants to upgrade, right?(Thread title + " feel it is time to replace")
He doesn't share why he bought the 80 in the 1st place.
How the hell can you answer the question with out making assumptions? Ever hear the cliche: Assume makes an ass out of u & me?
Please forgive a crusty old fart for having an opinion!

You should have started with an FJ80, but you chose an FZJ80 instead. You wouldn't be contemplating a 100 series right now had you not. All Land Cruisers are an upgrade from the 1FZ days.
