I received an email from Toyota today stating that there are updated navigation discs available now for only $169. I have been on the fence replacing it before since it was $250-$300 but I can swallow $169.

I am sure it is on here somewhere but I haven't dug around too deep.
With that, my question is...how do you go about changing the disc (I have an '04)? I know the player is under the passenger seat but I am looking for steps to replace. Or is it better to let the stealership do it in case I screw something up.

Any insight would be great. Thank you.

It's a DVD player.

Step 1: Remove plastic cover
Step 2: Press eject
Step 3: Remove disc
Step 4: Insert new disc
Step 5: press eject
Step 6: replace cover

If you do end up taking it to the dealer please post up what they charge for that procedure. haha.

As for the generation of the 2004 system I can't help there.

Anyone know what a smart shopper’s price is through Beno or C-Dan?

Last time i called they told me $200, but that was a year ago.

2004 is Gen 3 system, make absolutwly sure you buy the right disc. A Gen 4 disc will not work. Im afarid when they said Gen 23 they meant 2/3. There is no such thing as Gen 23.

Did you look in the owner's manual? There should be a separate manual in there for the navigation system.

It's extremely easy to do in my '05 ES, the disc is in the head unit under the screen. I know in the '07s there is a little panel under the dash that has to be popped off to get the old disc out, but it's still really easy. I know that some Lexus dealers have been raping people on doing this swap, it really takes only seconds to do.

Yup, it is literally that easy. You might want to just let the dealership do it since in the event it doesn't work for whatever reason, you'll be able to do something about it right then and there. They shouldn't charge you to put the new disc in.

2004 is a Gen 4 system for the LX (Lexus - What To Order). Wouldn't it be the same for Toyota?

I do not believe it's the same. Will need to go back and look, I could have sworn it was Gen 3 for the 03+ LC. However that was over a year ago when I did the research...

I wouldn't buy a Lexus disc for a Toyota, almost guaranteed they will not be cross compatible.

Gen 2 and Gen 3 now use two discs. One for the west coast and one for the east coast. I believe both versions include Canada. Gen 4 and newer can still use one disc for all of USA.
