Lesson Learned (rather embarrassing) ......
We installed an underground electric fence about a month ago and with one exception the dogs have become accustomed to it. We have one dog who is so singular focused on chasing squirrels that she forgets the fence is there. Once she's outside of the fence she will simply set down and will not attempt to re-cross the fence. Here is the stupid part on my behalf. I walked over and took her collar off and walked her back into the yard. If you are going to do this DO NOT HOLD THE COLLAR IN YOUR HAND.

Lol. I used to repeatedly drive out of the fence with dog in car wearing collar. Doh

And his collar was a buckle not a quick snap.

I've always wondered how effective they are for pain-resistant breeds like the various bully breeds. I know my pit-mix Lela is not deterred by pain at all. Sometimes it is like she barely notices pain.

We had a dog that would run throught the fence and take the pain for the few seconds it gave once the dog ran outside the zone. It's expensive, but this system solved all our problems. It's Petsafe YardMax, and has an infinate zone outside your wire, which means it continues to shock the dog until they run back or you get them back in. There is a timer, but it's beyond what gets the dog's attention. After two tries the dog never tried again.
