hey all.
iv got my '83 BJ60 here in aus.

The best thing about the 3b engine is the economy of the small diesel, the worst
thing is it is so underpowered, a decent suburban hill can see me drop to
3rd or even 2nd. iv got a few questions;

-is it worth turboing this engine? i can get a complete garret setup for $2.5k
uninstalled, (engines got 250k km on it) garret reckons 30% increase (conservative
at about 9-10lbs of boost)

-would i be better off just getting a bigger better engine, like a 2nd hand
1HZ/1HDT? the main prob here is the big jump up in cost, as i would probably go a
wreck or halfcut (open to suggestions)

i use my 60 for camping trips, stuffed with mates and gear etc as well as lots
of beach and sand dune runs, i'll be doing most fab stuff myself, just wanted to guage wats the best option in all your opinions?
i wanted to avoid 4b/6b etc as they imposs to get in aus.

any and all suggestions welcome!!
sorry bout the long post

you are in the land of diesel cruisers.. so no point running a 4b or 6b or anything other than a toyota.

You could go much cheaper than the 2.5k for turbo install. Thats a new kit, there are options to run a junkyard turbo, maybe off of a 13b-t or make up your own kit.

If money isn't the main concern you could pop in a newer 6 cyl diesel. Than you have years of cruising ahead of you.

There is much talk about the 1hd-t and 1hz on here, just up to what you find.

I hear ya on slow 3b power. I am in the proces of fixing up my BJ60 and have installed a turbo to help beat the blues. Mountain driving a 5300 lbs of truck(gear inclusive) with a slow engine gets frustrating.

thats another good point,
is it worth going thru the hassle of a junkyard turbo etc while i save the cash for 1HZ/1HDT?
i know brownbear and cruiserguy run bj60s with turbos, is the increase in power noticeable? or HUGE?

iv read A LOT about junkyard turbos on this site and more, just a little tense incase i love it, ditch the new engine idea, then blow the 3b up cos i tried to save some cash...
spose im just being a sissy.

I thought build your own kit is the best cheap turbo kit that you can use .:D

Buy a garret T28 :D one thing that I centany buy from AXT, Trubo glide or whoever, is the exaust manifold .. you can make your oil lines .. and air intake duct.

I would say turbo the 3b and see how you like it. If you still need more power then you can sell the 3b, most likely for what you paid for the turbo kit or more. Then put that money towards a 6 cyl. I think you with be happy with the turbo on the BJ-60. You should be able to maintain speed/gear or possibly even accelerate up those hills with a turbo 3B.

Cruiser_guy has an AXT. many times he has said how much he likes it.

The reason I say junkyard turbo is your in the right country to find all the goodies off of a 13b-t Then its a simple bolt on.

Hey Kon. How did you get your hands on a BJ60? I sure they weren't available here? Anyways, I'm almost in the same situation as you, except I have the 2H. I think I am going to buy a turbo for it. There must be engine specs around for the 13BT - check them out and compare them to the figures of the 1HZ - that way you could get an indication of the power difference. I know if an issue of 4wdMonthly, they did a comparison of fuel consumption across the Simpson. Can't remember the exact figures, but the diesel consumption of a HJ47 with a 13BT was heaps less than a hj60 with a 2H Turbo'd engine. Might be a consideration. Let me know how you go.

Cheers,

Mark.

I don't know anything regarding mileage comparisons, but according to a number of different sources the power for a 13BT vs. a 1HZ are quite comparable. The 1HZ is a bit up on power, but the 13BT is slightly higher torque.

I personaly would not put any of these turbos on my 3Bs, My 80 BJ40 came with a air research .60 a/r, It was doggy with a load at higher rpms with high egts. put on a jucnkyard .42 a/t with .48 on the exhast side and am very impressed with the difference. my 81 bj42 na 3b does not even compare as to power and excelleration on the road.

cool thanks heaps for the input guys! look like i'll start shopping round for a 13bt manifold and aim at a garret GT25 then start piecing together odds and ends for oil feed etc

keep the comments rolling you guys have been a world of help!!

Hey Kon. How did you get your hands on a BJ60? I sure they weren't available here?

they weren't, mine was imported from japan in 2000(ish). i bought it from a family friend who bought it from a guy who bought it from the importer...

looks like i might be stepping in your footsteps! great writeup btw..

Thanks, just wish I could tell ya some performance changes, but I have not driven it yet.

Japan4X4 on here(a vendor) sells parts from Japan, He may be able to sell you a new 13b-t and ship it over to you.

In canada we can't walk right into Toyota to buy one. But the good folks at G&S helped me out with this beauty.... :)

Exactly the reason I turboed my 3b around 3 years ago. I had AXT fit one to mine and haven't looked back, it is a lot more pleasent to drive espesialy in hilly areas with been able to hold the same gear.

would the same problems arise with a 3B transplanted into my FJ40?, im looking into doing the swap and have located the major components but i this will be my DD/wheeler would it be underpowered?

sorry to hi-jack the thread

I dont think it will be as bad as what Kon's is.
Your 40 is a few hundred pounds lighter.
The 3B is not over endowed with power but they are adequate in the right rev range.
It would be wise to drive one if possible so you know exactly what your getting.
As I said before, the condition of the engine will be a big factor.

ya, i was thinking the weight might be an factor with the power...i will be seeing about the condition of the engine somtime this week thanks :)

It all comes down to how much more power you want. I have done both AXT and turboglide and I can tell you that I would probably go with turboglide over the AXT, they are both close but the turboglide is cheaper.

If you want to add lots of power, you would be wasting you time turbo'ing the 3B shortly after you get used to the new power you will want more. Go and drive a 6x series with either a turbo'd 2H or 12HT, and also drive a turbo'd 3B the difference is amazing. If power is what you seek you will want to go with 12HT.

Oh, you want want to just drop in a whole new drivetraing and don't mind the extra work I would say do the either the HD or maybe even the 1HZ to start and add a turbo glide to that if you still want more. The 1HZ will give you more than the 3B out of the gate and if you turbo it, man what a difference.

I have 4 7x series, 1 with AXT, one with 13BT, one with 13BT turbo on 3BII, one without. I also have 42 series with AXT on 3B, 80 series with 1HD-FT. Speaking from experience if I wanted more power in my 70 series without turbo I will drop in a 1HZ (with turbo) or 1HD and not even waste my time with a 4 banger.

Cheers,

Michael

Go for the turbo!

I am dating cruiser_guys daughter and have been in his AXT turboed BJ60.
I have also owned a naturally aspirated BJ60 and now a HDJ81.

And I can honestly say, his Turbo'ed BJ60 (H55, 31 tire and 3.73) pull almost as good as my 1HD-T (Auto, 33 and 4.11). The thing is amazing.

Turbo yours! You will not regret it.

Cheers,
Nick
