A turbo in a 4runner is cool...right? My thoughts exactly. Anyways, the plan is to throw a 22rte and R151 in my 87 4runner. I know i need the rte computer and obviously the turbo. Is there anything i'm missing?

And whilst the time is ticking until i get my motor back, was just wondering if any one knew of any improvements i could make over stock and/or where i could find them.

There is a 22RTE-specific group on Yahoo, you should join that and post the same question.

I can tell you the radiator is different, there is a port on the top for coolant coming off the turbo.

Radiator is a 3 core, but same size as a 22re radiator (I have a 22rte radiator in my 22re truck). Also, many of the 22rte trucks had a digital gauge cluster. I wish I could find a pic of it to show you.

i wouldn't go with the set up either. in my ten years of working on vehicles ive never seen the 22ret in a vehicle. besides, the work you would have to do to set it up you could drop an even more powerful fi engine in there that is easier to find.

I believe the digital dashes required special senders to make them work = $$$ to swap

I have a set of SR5 gauges from an '87 turbo truck, they look pretty much the same as the regular SR5 gauges except they have a "Turbo" light on the tach that glows when the turbo goes to full boost. I'll sell it for $50.

I bought and parted out this truck last Winter, I only bought it for the R151F tranny. I thought about putting the turbo engine in my truck, but after about 15 mins of research I realized I would spend a LOT of money and go thru a LOT of trouble for not much benefit. I sold the complete engine and all wiring as a package to a guy that was gonna put it in his old Celica.

I agree - there are better engine choices if you wanna go thru the trouble. There's another thread on here about that exact topic.

The 22RTE is cool... But unless it was stock in the truck and it's running well.... it not worth all the work and heartache...

I'd look into a diesel swap, or a later 4 banger, they put out more power than the RTE.... Oh, and they are cool too! :D

If I wanted to bad enough I would get a Turbo manni and install it with lots of after market gauges. It's a 7 psi so...., also the stock timing does not retard enough really for turbo use, pre detonate and its all over but the cry'n :crybaby:

If you use the factory hard (oil) lines about the only thing you can do to it under the hood is change the spark plugs, pretty much impossible to do anything els....IMO pulling the motor and working in an unrestricted environment is better, time consuming but better.....soft line it and use band clamps and you MIGHT be able to pull the head...

Everyone seems to poo-poo the CT20 turbo on the 22rte. I'll let you know what I think when I get mine installed. :D

the casting cracks betwix the boost and exhaust end.
