got a link? ....is this set up fixed in or on the truck or a carry around unit?

i'd like to have something that's fixed and hard wired in.

It can be used ether way. Mine currently rides strapped down in the back the plan is/was to hard mount it, but it has proven to be handy in the portable mode. I wheel mainly with a group, there have been breakdowns where I cant get my rig there, having the ability to grab it and the impact/grinder/air hammer is better than hand wrenching on the trail.:hillbilly:

Mine are both holding up well. Mild use over 3 years. Still haven't hard mounted them because the portability is kinda nice as well, so undecided. Bought some high grade air line to replace the yellow plastic line it came with but the yellow is still holding up fine and coils up compactly. One of those half done projects for sure but the compressor is exactly what I expected.

I noticed the tank was smaller after comparing them, as well.

Thank you for the clarification, Bomar and ToolsRUs. I may consider this in lieu of a CO2 system.

Sam's club has the MV50 (Tsunami) compressors in stock. If you have a membership they run about $60 shipped. I ordered one before realizing this was originaly installed on a 91. I'll have to find somewhere else to squeeze it in.

Exactly. But, it still seems like a great value and just throwing it in the back doesn't seem so bad. If i can find a good spot to wire it in fine, otherwise i'll just keep it in the bag. The puma looks nice but seems pretty big. I already have my spare in the back. I'm thinking maybe i can mount this behind the spare and attach it to the 3rd row seat mount some how.

I have been beating on my MV-50 for almost 4 yrs. It is a great little pump. I have had the in-line fuse melt on me, but I just grabbed one out of my stereo wiring stuff. The only other issue I had was trying to reset a bead in 10 deg weather. I actually froze the air chuck... That may happen with any compressor, tho.

Here is mine setting the beads on my 37x14.50x17 bias Iroks:

What do you guys think of this one at Sam's? My big concern is that it gets power through the cigarette lighter, but it's half the price of the mv-50 and it's in-stock (mv-50 must be shipped, it may not get to me by Cruise Moab).

Overview
DIRECT DRIVE INFLATORS have no gears, larger pumping cylinders and a higher rate of air volume delivery.
Fewer moving parts make DIRECT DRIVE INFLATORS more efficient and longer lasting than gear driven inflators.
DIRECT DRIVE INFLATORS are extremely quiet and virtually "vibration-free" compared to gear driven inflators.
Specifications
# FAST TIRE INFLATION! 0-28 PSI in under 2.5 minutes
# 15 foot recoil air hose with quick connect coupling that attaches to 1 foot rubber air hose
# 8 foot power cord with 15amp fused 12v plug-in
# 4 LED lights built into the inflator that provide a powerful, steady beam of light for emergency & night time use
# Inflates virtually EVERYTHING!...truck, SUV & car tires, ATV & motorcycle tires, sports equipment & more
# Includes 7 inflation accessories and adaptors plus 2 extra 15amp fuses
# Carrying bag with two compartments provides convenient storage for inflator and all accesories

# Built-in analog pressure gauge with protective rubber cover for accurate PSI reading
# Plugs directly into the vehicle's 12v power outlet to operate
# 4 rubber feet help provide virtually vibration-free operation

I have never seen a "plug into the lighter" type that was even half way fast. Unless you have really small tires, probably better off getting a better one?

What do you guys think of this one at Sam's? My big concern is that it gets power through the cigarette lighter,

If it draws enough juice to do a decent job filling tyres then it will almost certainly blow the fusible link in the cigarette lighter socket. Then you are hosed.

If it doesn't blow the fusible link then it will be so slow you could use a bicycle tyre pump and be done faster.

If I had no other choice then I would buy an adapter that has a female 12v socket and 2 alligator clips for connecting directly to the battery. If you have some auxillary 12v sockets wired into the truck then you can use those. I wouldn't count on the stock 12v outlet for anything other than charging a cell phone.

The specs say it can fill a full-size tire faster than the mv-50:

Specifications
# FAST TIRE INFLATION! 0-28 PSI in under 2.5 minutes

Of course, that doesn't mean it can do it, but that's the claim. I'm very suspect since it goes through the lighter.

It's missing one all important spec, the tire size, it probably can fill a very small tire that fast.

Just purchased a Puma from Buzzard Gulch. I think this will be a good compromise for my needs between portability, OBA, and CO2.

Portable like CO2, but won't run out.
Able to keep making more air like OBA, but portable away from the truck in between.

Should be useful for both vehicular use and for support purposes at 24-hour MTB races and the like.

Thanks for all the info, guys!

Welcome to the world of advertising spin.

The specs on a serious portable air compressor will give you the air flow in CFM (or lpm) at 0 psi and at 90 psi. As Tools pointed out, they might be talking about a small 13" tyre or maybe a bicycle tyre from 0-28psi. Also, it might take another 2.5 minutes to get from 28-30 psi. I run my 35's at 40psi.

Doing my best to help the retail sector and help stimulate the economy (by buying cheap Chinese s***), I went shopping at our new Harbor Freight store and spend about $175. Got a lot of goodies, including this:

- Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices
But I paid $19.99, plus $8 for a 2-year "no questions asked" replacement plan.

I will use it very seldom, primarily for bike tires, inflatable boats and the random flat, not for airing back up after a rock crawling trip (cause i won't be doing any of that with my current set-up --gotta get a front bumper, sliders and better meats before that).

So, did I totally waste my $?

I also looked at this unit, but went with the much cheaper one...

Weather you wasted $$ or not depends on your expectations for the unit. Rock crawling is irrelevant, whenever you go off road you should air down, much easier on the tires, rig and driver. Do a test, air a tire down to 15psi, inflate to street pressure and post the time it took to inflate?

A couple of locals have this unit and the Tsunami is faster.

Well, Tofu's no "grocery getter", but there's "off-road" and then there's "OFF-ROAD". Yes, I fully realize that dirt road is not "off road", but in FL, most of my off-roading is on the job, looking at timber tracts, not rock fields or anything that I should air down for. 99% of my vehicle use is non-recreational.
