At random times, the clutch was a little hard to shift. I decided to bleed the clutch to get the air out. I had poor results and with some investigating, I found moisture on the back on the clutch master, so I replaced it and the slave (aisin parts).

Friend and I bled the system using pump and gravity method. The pedal was loose before but firmed up some after this. I closed the bleeder and the pedal pressure came back to normal/near normal.

Now, I cant get it in gear at all. It grinds in 1st or R. I gravity bled it again, keeping the bleeder dripping while I poured fluid in. Closed it back up and tried again. Same result.

What should I try next? Could air still be in there? I can look at the pedal adjustment next I suppose. I havent had any clutch slipping problems.

I would try adjusting the travel on the master. Under the dash where the pedal connects to the master there is a threaded rod that will allow you to adjust the throw on the master. With the new master and slave the throw is probably off, sounds like it is not fully disengaging the clutch. I will have to check which way of adjustment does what and post back.

Try doing a "standard bleed" Pedal down, open the bleeder then close again, pedal up. Repeat.

Attach a length of clear hose so that you can see how much fluid and air is coming out. This is pretty standard stuff.

I just put on a new slave yesterday on an 83 I have and used this method with fine results.

How old is the clutch?

When I got my '87, I would occasionally have trouble getting it to shift without grinding the gears. 1st to R was really hard to do. It gradually got worse and worse. I replaced both ends of the hydraulics like you did, bled, bled some more. Didn't help.

Dropped the tranny, clutch was DONE. Replaced it, all better.

Also, there should be ~10mm of freeplay under the pedal at the top of the stroke.

i know i was having the opposite of your problem, my shaft on my master was adjusted too far out, and would not let the clutch totally engage. these guys told me to do what i suggested to you and eventually i figured it out, i had no free play at the clutch pedal. but buy getting under the truck and looking i could see the slave was not returning all the way back in.

I adjusted the pedal linkage and it fixed it! Shifts really smooth now. Thanks for everyones assistance.

I will be doing a new clutch sometime this year, as I plan on dropping in an OM617 (made a trip to Lukes and was really impressed), but thats another thread....
