Hi everyone, I recently purchased a 2001 LX470. I have been lurking here and learning from you guys for the last 2 months, y'all rock 🤘

This is my first post on this forum and it's a bit of a doozy. Sorry in advance for the long read, but I could really use some pointers on troubleshooting this.

For the first month of ownership, I had no serious parasitic drain issues with the battery, the LX always started up on the first try, even after not driving her for a few days. But ever since I changed my power antenna (~2 weeks ago), the battery has started to die every 1-2 days. I assumed the drain was coming from the antenna motor... a bunch of water came out of the motor when I pried the plastic sides apart, and the battery started draining overnight, right after that job. But I unplugged the antenna relay behind the glove compartment, and the battery still dies, even with no power going to the antenna. So unless I'm missing something... correlation is not causation, in this case.

Since then, I have done a parasitic drain test by attaching my multimeter between the battery and power lead, to measure the amps it's drawing. Generally, I'm getting ~300 mA of draw, with the key out of the ignition and the doors locked. Interestingly, when the doors are unlocked, the LX draws 1-2 amps, which seems crazy to me. But even after a half hour, the draw was that high. I've read these vehicles are thirsty for electricity, so maybe thats normal or maybe it's related to the issue. I'm not sure.

But with the key out of the ignition and doors locked, I also get parasitic spikes up to 7 amps. And I'm not sure what's drawing that amount of power. Pulling individual fuses never caused the 300 mA of draw to drop any lower... based on what I've read in this forum, 50-100 mA is "normal" from the factory. I can try pulling the fuses again and see if the spikes go away, since it's the spikes that are really killing my battery. But this would be a very slow and long test, the spikes are a bit random, and I have a few other clues that might narrow this down.

1. At AutoZone, the Starter failed their diagnostics test. The only info I have from this test is that the "Voltage Under Load" was 12.2V, which sounds fine to me. And the Current Draw was 200 Amps. I guess that's low, but I haven't looked up what the factory starter is supposed to draw. According to the guy who ran the tests, the battery tested at 99% health. The alternator and voltage regulator also passed. I've read starters can cause parasitic drain, so maybe it's that, but there is another obvious problem that's got to be related to the draining issue.

2. When the car is off, I get a heartbeat thumping sound over the speakers. The LX has made this heartbeat sound since the day I bought it, before the battery drain was an issue. The heartbeat sound never stops, even when I pull the radio fuse, and I think it's gotten louder since I bought the LX. I'll come out to the LX in the morning and hear it thumping through the windows, while the battery is on its last legs. I've pulled all the fuses in both boxes and I don't think it's ever stopped the thumping, although I can double check that. This is super strange to me. When I bought the LX, I assumed the Mark Levinson amp was failing, or maybe the head unit... I get an error code when trying to play a CD, so the head unit has problems. But I don't know why the heartbeat sound would continue, even when the radio fuse was pulled.

And just to confirm, I am not able to turn the stereo on unless the key is in ACC or IGN. I've pulled the stereo out of the dash and all the wiring looks factory... there's no splicing or other tinkering back there. I do know the previous owner swapped out the speakers. I'm not sure what he installed, but I think the ML speakers are 2 ohm and most aftermarkets are 4 ohm. I don't believe this could cause the thump, but maybe it's related... ?

I'm going to be replacing the head unit soon, so I can eliminate that variable. I was also thinking about unplugging the ML Amp and see if that solves the issue, I just need to find the time to pull the passenger seat. Unless there's an easier way... I figured the amp would be connected to the Radio fuse, but I still get the thumping sound.

Any thoughts or feedback on all this? Or other suggestions for troubleshooting? Is it possible the starter is leaking power and the amp is somehow picking it up and thumping the speakers? TIA

Don't forget the fuses in the kick panels. I've been in the drivers side kick plate fuses, not sure if the passenger side also has fuses. You definitely need to download wiring diagrams which you can get from this site.

Thanks, appreciate the feedback. I pulled all fuses under the hood and in the drivers side kick when I did the drain test. I don’t think there is a fuse box on the passenger side, but I’ll double check the diagram that @leveeguy shared (thx for the links!).

Few thoughts:
1) "Heart beat" sound. May be antenna motor. It runs/powered, even when key removed. So that antenna, even after IG key OFF or key out. I don't recall, which or where that fuse is (var's by year). Find it and pull it. Or disconnect wire housing block that powers antenna.
2) DVD player. Ones in rear cargo area, or any not a factory. Factory are only in dash, and newer has changer in center console also. All others, are aftermarket. They're installed at depot or dealership, before vehicle sold off showroom floor. With the rear one. I find two after market inline fuses, under glove box. One is hot key out. Pull the fuse.
3) Water entry from around windshield. I only see this if windshield has been replaced. Water will run down "A" pillar. Gets into junction box (LH and or RH). When wet get get issue that go away when dry. But, over time oxidation built on contract from water. We then get electrical issue wet or dry.
4) Do not leave headlights in auto. The solar cell on dash, draws current. See OM: Prolong Parking.
5) Any aftermarket wiring. Any, I hate it and remove it all.

Wire housing block at motor. Is one spot we can disconnect power.

The inline fuse blocks, under dash. Are not factory installed. Looking at wires, heat shrink, ties, fuses, etc.. We can easily see not factory. Pull the fuses!

I remove, all aftermarket toys and wiring I find. In one that had battery tender wired in (no wonder). It took 3 days, to pull 3 boxes of non factory junk. No need for battery tender afterwards.

Thanks @2001LC , really helpful, appreciate the photos!

1. For the power antenna, I unplugged the antenna relay box that is behind the glove box. The antenna seemed dead, it didn't go up or down with either the LX radio turning on, or with the antenna button on the dash, and I still had battery drain issues overnight. But I can try unplugging the antenna motor directly, worth a shot to sanity check.

2. The only DVD player I have is the 6-disc in-dash unit that came with the ML Audio system. It is throwing errors when I try to play a CD, but there is no noise coming from it when the LX is off. I did pull the radio fuse overnight and still woke up to a dead battery, so I don't think it is the cause, but I'll know for sure once I install the new android head unit.

3. Interesting about the windshield. I will inspect the areas around the drivers and passenger kick panels, and see if there is any visible signs of water leakage or oxidation. Last time I was down there, I didn't see anything obvious, but certainly worth another look.

4. I will try leaving the headlights out of "Auto" mode and see if that makes a difference. Good tip!

5. From what I can tell, all the wiring is factory. The only changes I know the previous owner did was delete the AHC (sad to lose that, I may try to restore it in the future), and he replaced the factory speakers. Not sure if he changed the sub. But I'm pretty sure my LX is still using the factory ML amp. I'll know soon when I pull the passenger seat and unplug the amp entirely.

In your photo that shows an inline fuse behind the glove box, going to the head unit... do you know if that feeds power to the ML amp, or does that go to another CD changer (if installed)? If it goes to the amp, it would be much easier to pull that. Either way, I'll see if my LX has that fuse and if yes, pull it for testing purposes.

Those inline fuses are after market. They're found when rear DVD installed Toyota import holding depot, in TX.

I'd focus my efforts to; source of sound, first.
It may now be, battery has weakened from not being fully charged at all times. So only now, low battery start issue..

I just pulled the ML amp and parasitic draw went down to 40-50 mAmps, so looks like that was the culprit. Obvious in hindsight, but strange that the LX always made the heartbeat sound and the battery started dying 6-8 weeks after I bought it. I guess it was failing when I bought the LX and it finally kicked the bucket. The amp was super hot when I unplugged it, and the radio wasn't even on when I drove home.

Anyway, hopefully I wake up to an LX that starts on the first try, lol. I might inspect the amp and see if it's fixable, but since I have a new android head unit en route, I'll probably just run new speaker wires and splice it under the seat. Before I unplugged the amp, I listened to all the speakers and neither the tweeters nor the sub works, so not much to be salvaged if I attempt a repair of the amp.

I read there are some refurbishing kits out there, but the PO installed new speakers and I'm not even sure if the tweeters and sub are still in there. Maybe I'll check, but it is probably not worth the effort at this point. I don't need a killer sound system, just something that works and sounds nice.

Thanks to everyone for your input, much appreciated!
