Dumb question of the week. Can I squeeze a 1FZ in the back of my 80 for transporting? Before I go take measurements and eyeball it up I'm really hoping to hear from someone that has done this and if it worked out or was regretful.

Sure, it'll fit. The cargo area is much wider than the engine compartment. You'll likely screw up the tailgate getting in it or out, but it'll fit in there. Oh, and the seatbelts probably won't keep it in place. Just sayin'.

Why don't you just rent a trailer and save yourself the headache?

I didn't contemplate screwing up the tailgate, you're right. I'll just go with the trailer. Thanks Malleus

SUVs and station wagons aren't great for hauling heavy greasy objects. Interior gets contaminated and gross when you decide to haul humans.

Yeah, I know a few heavy greasy humans that are pretty gross, I don't haul them in mine! :poop:

But I agree, unless you have a cherry picker to slide it in just right, a trailer would be your friend here...even a shift in transit can really f'up the interior of your rig or leak some hidden oil all over that didn't get drained all the way.

Certainly much more doable if the head is split...could be worth the effort to break it down some if you are going to rebuild anyway and then maybe save on the trailer $$.

It is too tall to load with a cherry picker as a complete engine. I use the 8o to transport blocks and heads to the machine shop but they are separated and no oil pans on. Heavy canvas tarp on top of another tarp to protect the interior.

It may be a struggle. The hoist arm would have to be super close to the engine to be able to lift it high enough to clear the floor and but not hit the ceiling. Maybe not even possible.

A fork lift would need long forks due to the hatch being open.

palletize it if your gonna try

I shoved a 1fz in the back of a Honda element. It was a challenge to get it in but it fit.

Sure looks like it's in its element...
