i have a 1979 toyota 4x4 pick with a 20r. what transmisson are a direct bolt in?

Not according to your link..............says L43.
Search Marlin or call them direct.....it's quite possible that a "newer" 5 speed would fit in there.

I think you have to stay with an L series. If you bolt up a later (G/W series) trans, you will need a different cross member and drive shafts...

I would think you could bolt my R151 turbo tranny right up! see sig ;p lower first second and third gears than standard 5-spd and higher fifth
