Hey all,
My 1989 62 doesn’t like to be in second gear. Sometimes it takes a little to long to shift into it, sometimes it’s smooth. Most times it shifts right into third gear shortly after and if I need to accelerate it will downshift right into first gear before going to second.
This has been happening for the better part of a year. I keep waiting for the transmission to complete fail but it just keeps going.
I also noticed that overdrive will kick in only on the highway. Is this normal?

Is there anything I can adjust or do to help?
Thanks

Sounds like the governor isn't, well, "governing". Unfortunately, this is about the only part on the A440F transmission that is NLA. At least to my knowledge.

You could try Dave Stedman at Japan4x4. Here are the parts for the governor (you won't likely need the body, which is good, because it's long gone):

The valves, springs, (3) front O-rings and the gasket are what you'd need to rebuild it.

If it was me, I'd spend the money on a manual swap. The worst mistake I ever made buying and selling Land Cruisers was selling my 60 for a 62; that transmission is worthless, IMHO.

Thanks for the info. Guess I’m SOL.
