How many miles and what sort of driving was the engine put thru?
Rebuild a head, and go forward, they are tough. I had a similar problem in my forty, in the eighties, had the head fluxed and flattened, replaced all the bits, running strong today.

So this is a problem that cant be fixed by a rebuild. The head is actually trash due to the crack in the top of it.

Truck has 240K miles on it and I have no idea how those miles have been.
