My DD that hauls all my non-running FJ40's around is having major transmission slippage. :bang::bang: With 275k on the clock, figure it is about time for a rebuild or replacement tranny. :censor:

Anyone have recommendations for a rebuild shop? I am not scared to drop it and tear into it, but I have never rebuilt one before.

Dodge 99' 3/4 ton with Diesel engine. 47RE tranny.

Thanks

I'll check with Eric Jobe. He does lots of tranny work, but not sure if he is experienced with that particular model.
May be best if you dropped it and brought it out here for the OH.

BTW want to trade some insulation work for the MT cage we discussed earlier? Just a thought. Eric B.

Not a bad thought at all. I am in no hurry, but I would like to see what you think about two areas in my house. Basement as we discussed and attic of one part that never stays warm enough for me.

Thanks for checking on Eric, Eric.

Spoke to Eric J. yesterday. Says he can get you a good deal on one from Jasper, but is not interested in rebuilding yours. Something about a really big spring in there that is hard to compress without the proper tools. I guess he did one a few years back and says he won't do another. I'll pm you his # if you want to check on the Jasper trans.

Let's get together sometime to look at your house. I'm all about trading for stuff. Later, Eric

Mmmm horse trading.. My favorite way to get a cruiser built.. You boys have fun.. Butler.. I tried sending you an email from mud.. you get it?
kelly.. Still got your ARB stuff sitting in my garage.. No hurry it's not in the way.. Just fixed the massive oil leak in the ford.. $3.50 O ring on the dipstick holder on the pan. Scary to fix.. Didn't wanna drop that thing..

Usually on Fords, a $4 dollar fix costs a gran. Just had a buddy do the spark plugs on his f150. Had to pull the heads off to get the darn ceramic things that broke off. Great Engineering!

Eric- Sounds good on both counts... I am not in hurry, but I bet you want a rollbar, so let's set up a time. I will PM you.

Speaking of contacting each other, what ever came of the mailing, contact list we filled out at meeting?

I still have it. Just been really busy.

yes.. that $4 part would have indeed cost me about $1200 if it had fallen into the pan.. STUPID DESIGN.. you have to lower part of the dipstick into the oil pan abyss, fish in a new oring and pray. it worked great. otherwise to do it by book you pull the engine to pull the pan. WHATEVER..

HIjack over. you guys have a good time chatting.

Hijack continuing,

The FORD manual on the F150 spark plug thing: step one : Remove Cab.

Yep, to get head off, you have to lift the cab up 6" to have clearance to raise the head.

THAT IS GREAT ENGINEERING!

Like I say, I drive a Cummins.

I am still driving my cummins too - after $2650 injectors, $600 clutch & $2000 front end overhaul. I'm pretty hard on it tho. I'd still take it over a Ford PowerStruggle anyday! :D :D

I put a call into Eric, but have not heard back, is email better?

I'll call him tomorrow and tell him if he is interested he needs to get back with you.

if your serious and plan on keeping her around spend the money once.
Goerend Transmission Incorporated you can search around as well

Can i ask what your doing to it and where do you go that costs you so much ?

I pull a ~16,000lb trailer with it daily. The common rail injectors have their fair share of problems and mine weren't rebuildable so I had to buy new. But I also had the 60 hp tips installed for + $50ea. All other wear is typical for these trucks - from what I hear. Oh well, the repairs are cheaper than new truck payments! :hillbilly:

Crazy transmission.

I have been searching for a used decent tranny, but I have been workign on a paver patio at the house when all this starter.... So I decided to give the tranny a decent burial by fire. Just like me, going to hell wearing kerosene boxers!

So, I pulled my trailer (8 loads) pushing 20,000 lbs. No problems at all. Yet when I am unloaded, traveling 40 - 50 mph it does the 3 4 3 4 3 4 gear switch a roo.

Attached is a picture of the paver patio that we made. My neighbor Rob came through and helped me out a ton again. We had loads of AB3, sand, topsoil, sod..... transmission never felt like it slipped at all.

I will watch craigslist, and keep my ears open, and hopefully have a replacement 47re waiting when it decides to give up.

Thinking about doing a "rodney flush" on it. Seems that just changing the fluid in the pan gives it another year. Anyone know what chemical to push through the cooler lines and cooler to clean them out?

would a powerflush at one of the quick lube places help? they hook it to a machine that changes all the fluid, not just the pan but the torque converter and cooler etc.

Sounds like a great idea..... just hate having others I don't know work on my rigs. Control freak am I.

agree, but have seen more than one tranny live longer with a power flush.
it involves hooking into the lines and pumping new clean fluid in and old out.
course it could also kill it.. kinda like a blood transfusion.. just never know.

Do you have a cooler on the front? I flushed out the trans on an LX450 I had and was amazed at the improved performance. All I did was disconnect a line from the cooler, start it up and dump a couple of quarts of old into a bucket, top off with fresh, repeat, until the dark crap was gone and clean red was coming through into the waste oil bucket. I think it might have taken an extra gallon if that.

Sounds like a plan. Just have to figure out which side is coming out of the cooler.....

50% chance of screwing it up.

I remember reading about some chemical to put through a cooler, basically take off both lines and use a gravity or force feed method to push it through, then replace with new fluid. I will search a little bit....
