How can I visually determine which transfer case I have? Is it 3-speed or 4-speed one?
I searched and found that there were:
- '69-'73
- '74-'77
- '78-'80
- '80-'84
What were the differences between them?
What bolt pattern should they have on output shafts? Is it 68.5mm x 59.5mm

Up to 74 is the early case 74 to 80 is the four speed case. After 80 they used a split case like on a 60. The three speed and four speed have differnt flanges but are interchangable as is the nose cone. So could be difficult to tell just looking if parts have been swapped. I guess i dont understand your question are you asking what size flange for the drive shafts

T-case code decipher:

(bottom of page)

The T-case serial number is a combination of date code and serial.

The format is YMxxx
Y = Last digit of year (always going to be
M = Letter corresponding numerically to month
xxxx = Serial number of case that month

If the number on your case is 5 I 5858, that would be 1985, I=9th letter = 9th month= Sept., 5,858th case built that month

How about for the older one piece cases? I still don't know what year my case is since it isn't original to my '71.

Date code is in the same format for all years, except perhaps for very early (E-1962) cases.
