seems to me the side detent is for front wheel engagement, while the top detent is for HiLo...odd tho, the TSB refers to the feel even tho front wheel engagement is done via vacuum modulator and would be hard to "feel". how does changing the force of the spring on the front drive shaft detent affect the HiLo?...paging Georg...

I'm in a 60, not a 62 so it's a twin stick setup, not sure if I left that part out earlier. Seeing as it's not a push button 4WD like the 62 I don't believe it has a vacuum modulator? I could be wrong.

I would definitely agree the side dent is for the front wheel engagement. in my case, when putting it in 4H it wouldn't truely "click" or engage. It would more or less slide freely. Once it was in shifted down and to the right, it couldn't slide "up" so there was no issue with it slipping out of 4L (the only issue being I needed 4H not 4L)

I was refering to the TSB text...I'd be looking at the shifter linkage for the hi/lo selection, then if everything looked good there, then maybe, maybe check into the hilo selector detent ball and spring. Seems odd to me tho, because everyone seems to think this trick works for the hilo engagement, and I don't see the correlation

so I have both the springs, the longer one is the stock spring for a 60, the shorter one is the updated spring from the TSB.

now it seems to me......the longer one would have have more force on the locking ball.....or ?

I was getting to that ;)

but seeing the how the one at the top of t-case looks like I cant see it(which means I will screw something up, I suck with tiny parts) I just wanted to do that one once.

Easy enough to find out.
How about installing it and letting us 60 guys know how the shifter feels. Before and after?

The shifter that is the common issue, that can pop out, is the 4wd/2wd shifter. That's what that spring was designed for. It's located on the side of the case and you could literally do it in 15 minutes.

OK......I had to do it twice(2.5)....so i was over my allotted time.

1st I put the new ball(old one looked fine) and shorter(TSB, upgrade spring in), then I changed my mind.......put the longer(stock) spring in.....well it would not shift into any other range. So I went back and put the shorter spring (TSB) in.....and it goes into and out of gear just fine, but I can't really test it with a load(like up a dirt hill) as I am running on battery power(dead alt)

pics of the springs

top is the TSB part(which is what I ended up installing)
middle is the one that came out
bottom is the one that it calls for as stock(87 fj60) (which would not let it change gear)

but I also want to replace the low range spring and ball. I think its this 19mm bolt in about the middle of the pic with the scratch marks on it

Yeah, that long spring doesn't look like the right spring at all. That's a huge difference. No wonder it didn't shift at all.

The blue spring (TSB) looks right...compared to your original one. It's length is about the same as the original but the diameter of the spring material is larger. That would fall in line with the 50% increase in spring pressure noted in the TSB.

When you pull the transfer shift lever down to 4WD, does it feel any different than the old spring did? Does it feel like it locks in place better?

ill check the part #, maybe it for the one up top.

funny, I could not tell much difference with my naked eye(wearing costco readers) but in the pic I can see its thicker...and blue

id say it moves in out easier or the same....nothing dramatic. I'll give it a go this week. It never came out of high(that I remember) but just low, when going up a steep hill under a load, it may have been the boot also.....

The TSB says its for fj62's, but the picture shows a manual shift case. A vacuum shift equipped t-case doesn't even have the provision for the detent spring ball apparatus. Just sayin.

When you replaced the low range spring and ball, did you use the same spring / part number from the TSB (aka the longer spring pictured on the bottom) ? I apologize if that's a ridiculous question.

And how hard was it to access the Low Range spring?

I also ended up getting the longer spring in addition to the shorter one for the TSB part, and it would be very fortunate if it were to be the low range spring that may need to be replaced.

Great thread.! Lesson at Cruiser U.

Didn't get to the low range, because I was not sure what plug to take out, but it does look like from the FSM, the bolt /plug I was looking at is probably the right

The shorter blue spring is the oNE from the TSB. the long spring, not sure where it goes for sure

Yeah I've been searching all morning and your picture is by far the best. Trolling a few other threads that detail the same issue, I found some other vague pictures. It seems that top spring could be the culprit, if I can get it out

Can you confirm its a 19mm? Some have said its a 17?

19mm was what the side plug was, just assumed it would be the same.

checked with my guy, 90501 16115 (which is the TSB upgrade) is used for both the front drive and the low/high. the old part # changed over.

90501 16056(the long spring) is for the trany someplace......I guess I was not clear with my guy when I ordered them ;) (hey its starts with a T......)

some pics from the FSm, which kinda show the plug in the same spot as my crappy pic. getting to its no problem, its right on the back of the T-case. I did not have a small enough magnet to reach down to pull the ball out(on the side it just fell out) so I didnt' mess with it yesterday.

Thanks! My service guy did the same thing. I'll order another one today, and hopefully that'll do the trick

Hoping they still have some in stock..

went and replaced the high/low spring and ball. It was the 19mm bolt I had in the pic. Same spring and ball came out as the front drive plug. Put the TSB spring(and ball) in. You can probably skip replacing the ball, but I did anyway, got a small magnet and it came right out. Did not take it for a test(besides moving it in the yard) but I gotta say the lever now engages much much better than before, there is no doubt your in low(or high or neutral) now and it takes much more effort(you can feel the notches) to move it back to high, the kinda effort you would expect.

follow up to the above post.

took the 60 out with the new springs, found the same nice steep rocky hill that where it had partially(nasty noise) popped out of low range.

and......it stayed put, no more nasty noise, I even banged on the lever when in low going up the hill at 3000rpms(in low and 1st) to see if it would pop out.....stayed put

pretty sure it was just the springs(the high/low, not the front drive), however I had taking the boot off to check out if that was making it pop out, I didn't cut the boot or anything, just looked and put it back, so I don't think that was it. Boot looked and felt like a brand new one

so for less than $4 I am a happy camper.
