Today on a whip I was crawling around under my pig looking at the exhaust. I noticed a loose plate... Looks like the bottom of the transfer case or the trans. A few bolts missing, and I could see gears thru the gap...

oo oo :frown: and no gear oil leaking out huh?

So, of course, you slapped a little rtv up there and bolted it closed and added some gear oil?

Probably the bottom cover of the bell housing. The gear you see is probably the ring gear on the pressure plate for the starter. This is just in front of the transmission. If not the second guess would be the PTO cover but this is not really on the bottom but at an angle on the driver's side. This would not be good if all the oil gone.

Right in front--- yes:

Don't I need to fill it back up... where's the inlet bolt?

No, no. this is just the "dust" /dirt cover for the bell housing-flywheel clutch plate etc.

No biggie...as Living in the past say's-just bolt and move on.

edit: In your first post I was assuming that something like the the bottom/side cover on the transfer was off. You have no concern with your bell housing cover plate.

BTW- looks fairly clean down there. Maybe need a new oil pan seal sometime.

Filling it up would be a BAD thing!! Clutches and oil do not mix well!! The oil doesn't mind but the clutch won't work any more.

Heck, don't even bother to bolt it up...Pighead took his off years ago. For somethin', never got around to putting it back on.

I hate to disagree with someone like "Pighead" but I personally would keep the cover. A stray rock kicked up in there might do some damage.

it may appear to have a gap because originally there was a "seal" that went around the edge. i've only ever seen traces of the seals. doesn't have to be a tight fit, onlyh to keep major crap out.

Since the gasket is no longer available, I used some 1/2" wide double-sided foam insulation (about 1/8" thick) to make a new seal. Seems to be working pretty well.
