Talking out of my rear here, but didn't Toyota have an issue with a batch of 100 series trannies? There was a TSB and a silent recall as I remember.

For the $1100 difference in price quoted here, I would go with a new Toyota tranny. It's a lot of money-but you buy piece of mind for the next 100k.

How different (if any) is the 4 speed transmission in the 100 than the 80? They are both A343F's, right?

That price sounds better than I would have guessed for a Lexus. My 98 Dodge Ram needed a remanufactured Transmission from Dodge for about $2900. It did come with a warranty thru Dodge for 3/36 though. The original went out twice. First at 35k and then at 70k. Its a long story, but I ended up suing Daimler-chrysler and won. So it cost me nothing in the end. 101k is a lot of miles, but I'd make a stink and see if you can get them to at least eat some of it. Sounds like those years had some issues. A letter from a lawyer can help with these things too. All car makers know they will lose on almost any lawsuit concerning product reliability if there was a known issue. The question is do they want to gamble and end up eating a ton of lawyer fees as well. I'm not saying you should sue, but if it was a know problem, they need to chip in. I only sued DC because the smug customer service person said " go ahead and sue if it makes you feel good". So I did and after lawyer fees and court costs it probably cost them $8000 or so. And originally all I asked was they pay $1000 towards it! All I did was fill out some forms and send the lawyer all my maintenance receipts. Never even talked to or met him in person. I had forgotten all about it untill one day he called and said, " I've got them on the other line, so far I've got $3500 out of them but I think I can get more!". And he did! They settled of course. They do not want to get in front of a jury, all of whom have had a bad experience with a car manufacturer at one time or another. My vehicle was a work truck, so he was going to lay it on thick about loss of income, stress, etc. I usually hate lawyers, but this guy was awesome. Did it all on a contingincy basis so it never cost me a dime. He said he'd probably sued car makers 3000 times and only lost 2 . So he knew he was going to get something.

If you have time to wait, I would look at these transmissions from Australia (I think Slee is their US agent)

They come with 2 year unlimited km warranty to all non commercial retail customers and a 1 year unlimited km warranty to all trade and commercial inquiries.

Secret recall or secret warranties are those known problems to the car manufacturer that they will ignore and refuse to fix... Manufacturers have secret warranty books CHAINED to desks in regional offices, most dealers don't even know they exist until the problem is detected many times or you become a royal PITA so they'll finally fix it. Secret Warranties are illegal in Virginia.... god i love my state !

Forums like this help the consumer a lot, but also car manufacturers love to get in here to try to get material against you in case that your vehicle is under warranty and you file a lemon claim.. Material they look for: Modifications, vehicle abuse on or off road... etc... basically anything that could void your warranty...

are you advocating putting a tranny of unknown history (ie one from the salvage yard) into his 00 LX? why on earth would one do that? this isn't a trail rig or some beater. the one from the yard could be hundreds, thousands or tens of thousands of miles from being dead. way too much risk, as he's looking at $1K in install labor plus the hassle of doing it again.

my question about the $3.8K being low was assuming that this was a quote for a NEW transmission, not a reman'd...

i second giving dan a call. tax savings should offset the freight on a tranny from him. his good shopper price should beat any quote from the dealer... now to find a good shop to do the work.

What I am advocating is trying to find a tranny with known history from a yard with a wrecked 100. I really do not see anything wrong with that. But I also second the idea of just having it rebuilt by a good shop.

If you buy the transmission through Toyota they will give you $1000 for the core. Is there a reputable independant toyota shop in New Orleans who can do the labor for you? I'm thinking you should be able to do this for about $2800 total. Maybe more due to shipping?

The remanned tranny from Lexus is $2525.50, & that is after the core.
This is the same price I am finding from Toyota.

I can find it a little cheaper elsewhere, but I do not have an independant shop that I know of.

What an asset we have there.
Got a pretty good vibe about pricing, & he made a good point in reference to the warranty. If the dealer puts it in as opposed to me, the labor is also warranted.
The service Manager is checking into the "secret recall".

It may just end up being worth your time to spend the extra money depending on how much your time is worth to you.

How can I tell if my 00 cruiser is one with bad shims? Is there a range of VINs available?

I'm a little concerned because my High-Low lever does vibrate during acceleration and pretty much all the time on the highway. Not audible, but it's there. If you place your hand on the shifter you can feel the vibration. Is that normal???

ok, maybe i am going to show my ignorance but that kind of money? by god, the dealer had better hold my hand and show me the part/parts that failed i mean i think you deserve that over just "it failed" or whatever the hell reason they have given you. i guess that falls under that whole customer service thing.

Tundra transmissions in the 99-00 range were notorious for problems and the overdrive planetary gear was known for being weak. Maybe this is a similar problem?

This is raising some concern for my 2000 LC. I owned two 80 series a 96 and 97 prior to the 2000. I ran these up to around 120k miles with no issues, I am at 118k on the 2000 and was hoping to push it over the 200k mark.

I was about to drop some $$ on mods but sure would hate to lose a tranny after I spend all of my fun money on mods.

I have seen a couple of other threads re: tranny problems but could not get a good sense of how common the problem is.

Any of you guys got a good feel ?

These threads got a lot interest because no one seems to have heard of a 100 tranny going out before. These last few were out of the ordinary and one of those was clearly some sort of maintnence error. With regular proper maintnence I see no reason to worry.
