Toyota Logos

In 1936 Toyoda Loom Works held a public competition for a new logo
design for their new vehicles. There were 27,000 entries and the
winning design led to a name change as well as new logo. Toyota was
born. The streamlined katakana characters were made with eight
strokes, a number that connotes luck and prosperity in Japanese
culture. Those unfamiliar with Japanese writing sometimes call this
the "T37" or "teq" logo. It is no longer presently used on products,
but is still used corporately. The trademark on what we in the U.S.
call the "old" logo is still active.

Toyota started selling cars in the United States in 1957, but this
start was slow and tenuous. Less than 300 vehicles were sold the
first year in America. Toyota did not register their logo with the
U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for about ten years, finally doing
so in 1967. They filed trademarks on the Toyota logo as well as the
Crown and Corona all on June 9, 1967. Curiously the TEN electronics
and radios owned by Toyota filed for a U.S. trademark on the TEN name
back in 1964, the radios had been using that name since 1961.

Toyota introduced a new logo to help differentiate itself from the
newly released Lexus luxury line in 1989 and add focus in a world
market place. This new mark "consists of three ovals: the two
perpendicular center ovals represent a relationship of mutual trust
between the customer and Toyota. These ovals combine to symbolize
the letter "T" for Toyota. The space in the background implies a
global expansion of Toyota's technology and unlimited potential for
the future." (Toyota). This is the logo seen today on all Toyota
vehicles.

On January 25, 2006 Toyota introduced logo for celebrating its 50th
anniversary in the United States. The logo is a gilded ingot
symbolizing the company's golden anniversary and features a stylized
50 encircling a globe prominently displaying North America.

Other trivia:
The word corolla describes the ring of petals in a flower (like a
crown). Toyota adopted the Corona name for its 1966 small saloon, and
the Corolla "crown" emblem was in use until about 1990. In 2006 the
name was given up in the European market, but the Corolla name will
live on in other markets, including Japan.

TEN Electronics: First use February 8, 1961. Trademark filed February
17, 1964
Corona: First use September 17, 1955. Trademark filed June 9, 1967
Crown: First use June 26, 1964. Trademark filed June 9, 1967
Corolla: First use November, 1966. Trademark filed May 20, 1968
Sprinter: First use April 5, 1968.

Just found this:

TOYOTA LAND CRUISER Data Library

The Toyota Crown was first released in Japan in the mid-1950s when Toyota was working fast to build a domestic sales network to handle the demand.
It was in such circumstances that from 1956 on, as part of Toyota's strategy the company decided on what was called the Land Cruiser strategy for foreign markets. Given the fact that its performance could hold its own against rival models such as the Willys Jeep and Land Rover, Toyota decided it was the right time to expand in foreign markets, and whenever the opportunity presented itself Toyota was there with the Land Cruiser right out front. The Land Cruiser helped Toyota establish a bridgehead, and the idea was to follow with sales of passenger cars.
In this way with expansion into foreign markets, Toyota gained competitive strength by making the necessary changes and improvements through model changes, thereby effectively extending its export sales channels. Whereas the BJ-type Land Cruiser was originally built for military use, its design in time was modified to serve industrial expansion in peacetime, partly for the purpose of stimulating domestic demand for Toyota vehicles. Then in 1955, alongside production of the BJ-type Land Cruiser the 20-series made its debut.

The engine in the early model FJ20 was an F-type engine with a compression ration of 6.8 and an output of 105ps. However, by the later models in the series the compression ratio had increased to 7.5, and the output to 125ps.

At first, the B-type engine that was installed in the BJ25 was produced alongside the F-type gasoline engine (3,878cc, 105HP) that went into the FJ25, for which the prototype had been completed in 1948. When the B-type engine was phased out of production, leaving only the FJ-type. The wheelbase on this chassis was made a bit shorter, and the drive power improved, the 3-plate springs were replaced by 4-plate springs developed for the Crown (the BJ-type Land Cruiser had 9-plates), thereby making it a more comfortable ride.
The FJ25 was positioned as the standard of the FJ20-series for the domestic market, but in all there were 10 variations available from FJ20 through FJ29. There were two variations on the wheelbase, 2,285mm and 2,430mm, and along with the FJ26, 27, 29, and others, there was also the 4x2 Land Cruiser made for the National Police Agency. In 1958 the wheelbase was extended to 2,650mm, and a van body FJ35V was introduced.
After the increase of demand during the Korean War, Japanese automakers were invited to bid to meet further demand for military vehicles by supplying the U.S. Army Procurement Agency in Japan (APA). For this reason, in 1957, test vehicles supplied by Toyota, Nissan, Isuzu, and Mitsubishi, ranging from compact to large-sized trucks were gathered at the Aberdeen proving ground on the outskirts of Baltimore, Maryland for a comparative test run. This test was overseen from Toyota by Chief Engineers Inagawa and Iritani. The result of the test run was that the Toyota 750kg capacity truck (2FQ15L) and the 2.5-ton capacity diesel truck (2DW15L) were adopted for procurement. The performance of the FJ25L was not bad, but unfortunately it was fated to not be selected for procurement.
However, by this time the superiority of the Land Cruiser had been acknowledged by the U.S. military, and as a confidence builder, this was all that was needed to convince Toyota that the time was right to expand in the American market.

The leaf springs are larger than those on the Toyota BJ, and both pivot and shackle are stronger. The anchor bracket of the leaf spring is fixed to the frame with a rivet. Welding technology at the time was not that reliable.

The development theme for the 20-series was a new style with more driving comfort. As a result, it didn't have much in common with the Toyota BJ, instead showing more soft lines in the body styling. These major changes in the chassis frame created a basic design, which through the transition to the 40-series remained unchanged for 29 years.
To improve the riding comfort first the springs in the suspension were changed. The leaf springs in the front and rear were lengthened and the number of plates reduced to 4 to create a softer cushion. In addition, rubber bushings were added to the pivot and shackle in order to dampen the vibration transmitted to the cabin. Moreover, the inner channel of the side frame was extended, and the number of closed structure members was increased. The frame itself was strengthened so that the vibrations from the suspension would be absorbed rather than transmitted to the body.

Compared to the Toyota BJ-type it has a more spacious interior, and the steering column has been moved more to the outside. The air-conditioner is made by Nippon Denso. The heater is located below it to the left.

The FJ28V has a wheelbase that is 145mm longer than that of the FJ25. This model also comes with a 3rd seat that was installed in the luggage area. The roof is made of steel, with reinforced plates on the inside. The window area is rather small.

Along with greater riding comfort, the interior of the vehicle was also made more comfortable. It was larger for one thing, and by remounting the engine 120mm forward the cabin could be extended by 200mm. The steering column was moved 10mm to the outside, which also gave more width and spaciousness to the cabin. These changes made it possible to move the parking brake lever from where it was on the passenger seat side in the Toyota BJ to a new position closer to the driver's seat. This was an improvement in operability as well.
From the earliest models of the 20-series, the engine, transmission, transfer, and even the final drive gear were all basically the same unit throughout. Minor changes were made in the gear ratios of the 1st and 2nd gears favoring high speed driving, and a synchromesh mechanism was added to the 3rd and 4th gears. At the time synchromesh transmissions were being added rapidly not only to passenger cars but also to trucks.
With these changes the 20-series was made available in 2 types, a short wheelbase of 2,285mm and a long wheelbase of 2,430mm. Compared to the 2,400mm of the Jeep BJ, the short version had improved maneuverability, and while the long version was only slightly longer it had a higher loading capacity. Using just these two chassis, from the BJ to the FJ, the 20-series went through a number of body variations.

Here's a piece of US Toyota history:

eBay Motors: Toyota : Toyopet Crown (item 330245825611 end time Jun-29-08 18:08:43 PDT)

Someone save the pics?

Winning bid: US $22,322.00

From a post on an email list:

The Toyopet's new owner may live in the Midwest since his bid
history indicates last month he won an auction for
a 2007 Camry Hybrid located in Tennesee. But then
the buyer could have simply flown to Tennesee and drove
the car home to Seattle or whereever. Anyway, we know
the buyer likely wasn't a Toyota dealer or Toyota employee.

I would have thought that a west coast dealer would jump at
the opportunity to have a '58 Toyopet on permanent display
at his / her dealership since the '58 model is the rarest and
has such a colorful, albiet embarrassing, history (Toyota
executives were almost stranded trying to drive the
car from Los Angeles to San Francisco since it could not
be driven above 45-50 MPH without overheating). And
I read that when the decision was made to return 200
unsold California Toyopet's back to Japan Toyota's Chairman
Taizo Ishida was so dissappointed he yelled: "Throw them
into the Pacific."

This is something that was sent to me quite a while ago...just getting to translate it now....Very interesting stuff.

It's a data sheet of corperate data...very interesting to see the evolution of the company and to see what they were doing during WWII.

It's quite extensive...over 100 pages worth.

I'll be posting things day by day as i translate it...i'll also be adding some web sites to give a better perspective...and ...I will be going from the start to present day...so...check back every now and then to see more info...most updates that are significant i will highlight red...but i will be editing as i go along...if you have any significant info that might be helpfull pm me ok :)

I dont know if this is in the right area...maybe Woody can make a Toyota Historical Forum

Hello everyone.
Nice thread Johnny! I'm glad to see there is a place with people interested in Toyota history!

I don't want to stray off topic, but bear with me for my following ramble...

Quick background - Even though I'm new here, I've been part of the Toyota scene for a number of years. I'm a member of the Toyota Owners and Restorers Club (TORC), and I hang out at Japanese Nostalgic Car and Old Japanese Car. I've also got my own website, toyotageek.com and manage a couple of Groups - Classic Toyota Town, 2000GT and Toyopet Crown. I've known about IH8MUD for some time, but never joined since I wasn't really a Cruiser guy - silly me! The funny thing is I kept coming back because everytime I searched for some obscure old Toyota info, Google pointed me here. When I found this thread I decided to finally join.

My main interest in Toyota is primarily pre-1970's vehicles, Toyota history, and collecting Toyotamobilia. Those are the reasons I started my own website as well as the Groups I manage.

To the point - Johnny, in your first post you mentioned you received 100 pages of corporate data that you were translating. Mind if I ask, what exactly was that data & where did you get it? (Do you think I could get a copy of this data from you?) What you have done here with this thread is something I was eventually planning to do on my own site - I plan on having several pages dedicated to Toyota history and include some timelines/charts. I would love to to use some (most) of the data that you have compiled - would you mind sharing the info you have posted? If you're open to the idea, let me know and we can talk more about it.

Now, I'll let this thread get back on topic, and I promise to check out more postings and provide input whenever possible! ;)

Hello Michael aka Toyotageek

I know exactly who you are...you have some wonderful stuff on your site...i check in every now and then to see what your posted new. A few times I was going to email ya...you know your toyota history....just never got around to it

The proble I believ is that all this is going in the 25 section...this is a slow moving group :D

The stuff here was a document that I received from a Toyota jp. employee many years ago...I dont even know if he was really suposed to just give it out :)....but I got it :)

I have been putting it together with other known facts and translating as not to get into copyright problems.

Feel free to use any information on here ...this is why I put it all here so people can use it and learn from it.

Shoot me a PM with you email....we'll discuss further.

also check out the WIKI ih8mud...i have just started working on the old ak10 information...and will be building upon it more and more with all my crap :)

JohnnyC

Hello Jim & Johnny and thank you for the welcome to IH8MUD.

I sort of know Jim since he joined my Classic Toyota Town a number of years ago. I'm happy to be a part of the group here and I'll try to help out, and provide info or pix whenever I can.

Johnny, thanks for giving me the ok to use the data you have translated. I wouldn't call this corner of IH8MUD slow moving, but it is kind of "out of the way" for your general Toyota enthusiast.

It's funny how I stumbled upon this thread, as I was Googling "Toyopet Route Truck" to find out about a diecast model I was researching... ...but that's another story.
