This is a legendary tough tire for any use you have in mind. Stable enough for heavy towing, tough enough for mining road sharp rocks and they wear like iron. For me, they had two drawbacks on the 80 - rough ride and mediocre road traction - especially wet and snow.

Rough ride compared to what? I'm not expecting to get the same ride the OEM tires do. I expect any tire with a stiffer (ie thicker) side wall is going to ride rougher than the Micheliens it has on it now.

The wet and snow thing would be a deal killer for me.
The sales guy pointed out the raised center section that makes the tread shallow after 50% of the tread life. Would that explain your experience? BTW he was steering me toward the MT.

Dan,

Rough because I believe the M55 is only available as a 10-ply vs the stockers are likely 4 ply. Mine were 10 ply and brutal even though they were narrower than stock (265/75?). As for poor wet/snow grip I believe it's a function of the wear oriented tread and the wear oriented rubber. Generally with these two aspects of tire construction you pick either wear OR traction but not both and I think the M55 is oriented toward the extreme 'max wear' end of the spectrum.

Life is a series of compromises isn't it?:D The 19 ply would be great from a sidwall protection point of view, I worry a lot about sidewall punctures. But it has the ride trade off.

Wet weather traction is a huge deal, one or the other of us is depending on this rig to get to and from work during the winter.

Thanks for the feed back.

Are you really going to want a mediocre performing tire for the next 80,000 miles? This looks like a good choice for a fleet tire where you need 50 tires on a dozen vehicles and they all need to be interchangeable. But It doesn't strike me as a good fit for the 100.

For toughness with good snow and wet traction then the BFG AT sounds like a natural choice to me.

The 80K + thing has me worried. I have a tough time throwing away stuff that isn't worn out. If these tires get the milage I've heard about I'd be dealing with the warts for a long time. Hell the OEM style tires I have on it stil have maybe 30 or 40 % tread and I'm having contractions about changeing them out.

BFG AT's suck ass in mud. Great every place else, I've run them on everything from my FJ40 to a 2wd Chevy to my Old 4WD Sierria 2500 GMC. They wear like iron, very quite on the road, great on snow or ice. Okay on rocks, gravel and sand. But they suck in mud.

i have had may sets of bfg's ...the m55 is way better in all catagories...if you want a better offroad tire you get a swamper.

Love the Swampers on my FJ40, but the B52 engine noise sound effect would drive my nuts in the 100. It's kind of cool in the 40, people hear me coming a mile or two before I get there.
