The the wheel centres are roughly going to be 2750mm or 108.26 inches. I going to shorten the chassis by about 200mm or 8 inches. I think a wheel base of about 2550mm or 100 inches should work well with 35' tires and a SOA conv.

For interest sake, the leafs I am using are Old Man Emu 60 series front and 79 series rear. The 79 series centres are roughly 400 mm, 16 inches longer than stock 60 series rear leafs @ 1450mm 57 inches. I took all the overloads and middle blade out of the 79's leafs.

Very Nice That hole saw would have come in handy when I did the SOA on my FJ40. I did my spring mounts the same way, but with a hand held hole saw.

Just a thought but you might consider boxing in those engine mounts and adding a little gusseting. That 8cyl engine will have a lot of torque, when you are in low range on a hard climb you don't want to twist one of those mounts off.

Thanks Rusty. I will definately still box and reinforce those engine chassis mounts. I'm just tacking everything together at this stage, to see that everything turns out ok. As soon as I start stripping to sand blast and paint, I will reinforce, gusset, weld etc etc everything on the chassis.

For some stupid reason I never thought about making left and right fixed leaf chassis mounts, oh well, I guess S**t happens. Luckily this won't be build as a show queen.
Front mounts:

I used threade bar to line the mounts up on the chassis and to get the centre I wanted:

Nice little bit of workmanship my friend;):beer:

Thanks Radd.

This past week was rather busy @ work so I didn't do to much on the rig. I cut the chassis, shortened it by 180 mm, and put it back together., I made inserts from 6mm plate according to the chassis shape, drilled holes into the chassis to be plug welded, and made backing plates for the inside of the chassis rails as extra support. The join should be strong enough..

Prepped the chassis before inserting the inserts:

Once I have polished the welding you will only be able to see the plug hole welding a bit on the outside of the chassis rails. Neat enough for a Toy.

Also received the JBA Headers from Summit for the 1 UZ VVTi this week. Although they are shorty headers for the 2 UZ they fit perfectly on the 1UZ.

Worked on the rig the last week or so.
Fitted radiator, made leafspring saddles and fit the diffs to the leafs, made body mounts for the chassis and fit part of the body. I fitted the body as low as possible on the chassis as far back as I could to line up with the front diff after the shackle reversal was done..

cool! i wish i had a h55 or whatever tranny you said your running.. im trying to mate my 1uz to a r150f 5 speed toyota tranny and the bolt together was easy but the flywheel/thowout bearing and all that sure are a pain

this last week I shortened the rear end of the chassis. I made a new cross member for the rear and chopped the chassis right behind the rear shackles, so much that the shackles will sit inside the rear bumper. I reckon this will definately help with the departure angle..

Looks way better with the rear end of the chassis removed.

Have also cut the rear end of the tub, will hopefully start with the bodywork this week, including adding 2 xtra doors making this a 4 door-4 seater toy..

SUBSCRIBED!!

Wow, what an awesome project!

I would love to get a hold of the 1UZ - H55 bellhousings! Is your fabricator making any more of these?

I really like the way you spliced the frame - job well done! That'll be solid as can be!

Best wishes, and keep up the amazing work - can't wait to see more.

Jeff

Apologies for not replying sooner. Had a long time not working on this rig due to rebuilding and stroking my AC Cobra's 302 to 347 and being extemely busy at work. But I started working again on this rig recently. At this stage I am trying to complete the body for the 4 seat config. I am also busy thinking about tossing the 1UZ VVTi motor for a SBC 350 or even 383. Not to sure if the 1 UZ will give me the horses of a properly built 350, I can also do a fuel injection on a 350 at a later stage. I am also thinking of going to 37'' tires instead of 35's..

Been a while since I've last posted here. Not much happened during the last few months with this rig, but I have pretty much figured out what I want the end result to be. I will be throwing out the 62 series diffs for 80 series units, fit coils suspension all round and fit 37' rubbers driven by a SBC 350.
Will update with pics soon.

Here is how I extended the Tub. Remember, 40's in South Africa is like hen's teeth. So here if you want a 40 look-alike, you must build one.

Apologies for the poor quality pics.

Here is a better indication on where I am heading with this build.
