So im really looking into clemson55's pig. I need to get to florence though, maybe 3 hours, not really sure. But, uhual is telling me theres no way a pig is going to fit on a car hauler. So, im asking what you guys have used to tow a 55.

Thanks

GR, I just went through this myself. I actually bought a Tow bar off of craigs list and had my shipper bring it all the way from Tucson to southern TX. The tow bar was drilled through my bumper and the magnet lights were set on the roof of the Piggy. Everything worked great all the way home. Almost a 1000 miles. Hope this helps. There are pics of the tow bar and all here on my thread.

towing

i just told them i was towing a 93 lincoln towncar it is wider and longer and about the same weight as a piggy it was no problem they only inspect the tow vehicle so it was fine i towed my piggy with a 2005 trail blazer and i was fine hope that helps oh and it was a 7 hour tow

I used the U-Haul method a coupla times. Those tire straps are waaay too small. And the 45 mph max speed sticker on the fender  I wanted a more heavy duty trailer so I called a few local trailer shops to see if they had a used or a rental. I finally ended up buying a used one after I rented it the 1st time.

My shipper towed mine with the tow bar (refer to my pictures) at 70mph from Tucson with no problems. And since the tow bar collapses it's staying on the pig...

u=Haul can be a PITA........just told them it was an fj40........no problems; but was using borrowed dodge ram 2500 turbo diesel as a tow truck........it felt like there was nothing there HTH

I suppose you could tell them you are towing a toyota Station Wagon since that's what's on the title, or at least it is on mine.

My daughter towed the '55 from Minot, ND to Vancouver, B.C. in 2002 using only a tow bar and with a rusty '84 BJ60 and the naturally aspirated 3B. She was 16 at the time (I don't recommend that for every 16 year old though). It can be done, just take it slow and easy, the few minutes saved by going 70 instead of 55 are not going to be worth much if you loose it all!

I finally welded up the tow bar holes a couple of weeks ago.

I have the same towing question as the origonal poster. I am looking at a Piggy which has been sitting for some time and would not want to chance a tow bar tow until I had a good look at the axles and bearings. I was actually hoping a uhaul car trailer behind my Safari might do the trick. Does anybody have near the dry weight (been through the scales) of their Piggy? Is uhaul definitely not allowing trailers to be rented to tow FJ55s?

Canucksafari - my stock pig weighed in @ 4100 lbs +/- a few ....while at the scales of the local landfill.....what pig are you looking at.....?(south of the border?)

I am looking at this one as a starting point: Toyota Landcruiser fj55 1972. I asked the seller for a few more pics and had some more questions for him on frame and body pannel rust before driving down from Canada. He got back to me saying he had no more pics as the vehicle was not at his home. He also said that the rust was a fair bit worse than the pictures showed but he did not fill in the details as to where. If I have the time on the weekend, I might make a drive down there for a closer look. There is another candidate in Moses Lake: FJ55 1971 Toyota Land Cruiser

John, unknown to me at the time, the front wheel only had 3 nuts holding it on and they were all on one side  (3 adjacent studs). I told her that was not a very smart decision. Anyways, she made it without incident and the first thing we did was replace the studs, all 6 of them.

John, good luck with the pig hunt - those two appear to have decent potential.
