I have 2 transmissions and 3 converters in my garage, I just sent one of them down myself. I'm putting the transmission (A440) behind a Isuzu 4BD I'm in the process of rebuilding.

If you cant get it out yourself it sounds like you are kind of stuck with getting what ever a shop is willing to do. You still need to confirm that is the issue or only issue as well.

There is a small chance that I may have found a guy who is able to help me with pulling it out and sending it off and able to do it at my house. Here is to hoping. Yes, the biggest concern is that the converter is the only problem but he should also be able to assess that.

Steep just a follow up on the v/b upgrade ,when don gets back from holidays he is going to translate to Walter the procedure, I'm sure your converter won't be back by then so it should work out

I have the EXACT SAME drive train you do and got my torque converter rebuilt at US transmission here in denver for $280 bucks out the door.

They cut it open, replaced some sprags and replaced the clutch material in there, welded it back up and even painted it for me. Not sure what is wrong on the inside of yours, but 1700 sounds way too expensive.

Hey guys, I am restarting this thread. I have been away for about a month and now I have a friend who is going to help me drop the tranny and pull out the torque converter. The plan is to send it to roadrunner down in Arizona and have them rebuilt it. I have never pulled out a tranny before nor dealt with a torque converter but my friend has. Are there any things specific to diesel cruisers that we should be aware of? Any special tools needed? Any and all input is greatly appreciated.

While doing this job I plan to replace the rear seal. Anyone have a part number of that? Can it be found in the Vancouver area anywhere or does it need to be ordered from the states?

As we will be taking out the tranny are there any other things we should look to upgrade or check while we are down there? I don't think we will mess with the valve body at this point as I want to see if the new torque converter will solve my problem.

I also plan to instal glow shifts 3 in 1 gauge. I haven't been able to find a good thread on this. Can anyone direct me to a good thread or give me some tips.

Torque converter rebuild

Sorry to place I have used is not local, they are in AZ. The cost of a lower stall, HD lock-up and reinforced fins with all new bearings was Sub $200. But you would need to remove and send to them (about $30 each way) with a 1 day turn around.

I do not know of a way to diagnose it any further with out dropping the trans and starting to dig around to see where the issue is. It sounds like you had quite a bit of contaminants in the fluid as well? Lock up issues are very hard to nail down there is a lot of variables and systems involved.

I would not be driving it any further at the risk of truly messing something up, a converter that does not lock and releases metal contaminants into the fluid has the potential to lead to a costly rebuild if driven.

Also if it does turn out that the trans needs ot be rebuild make sure the converter gets done as well. I have head of some horror stories from guys just rebuilding the trans and leaving the converter only to wipe out the trans again because of it.

Do you remember the name of the place in Az that rebuilt your torque converter? How has it performed so far?

Roadrunner converters in Phoenix, AZ.

I've had multiple converters built by them and quality is always excellent.

They're the only company I use now and a few of my buddies are running their converters in their Dodge diesels and one Ford powerstroke. I built the trannys and they've got a lot of hard miles on their converters with none of us every having an issue. I highly recommend their stuff.
