I guess you are right! Now if I could just get my hands on an FJ45 wagon…
The 45 wagon is cool.It would be great in an Aussie outback but in the US off road environment, the rear overhang would hinder ability in so many trails.
The 55 had less but even with 6" lift you needed a substantial rear bumper to absorb the frequent impacts. Each Toyota wagon, 60 and 80, got progressively better in that respect.

I guess I’m the contrarian....

While Toyota sold FJ40s around the world, Mexico isn’t remote Africa.

I don’t know this to be fact but I’ve been to Mexico many times, and I don’t recall seeing many FJ40s there. I do remember seeing a great many American cars. This is just my opinion, but I would think parts availability and mechanic familiarity with a carbureted small block Chevy V-8 would be much, much better than with a Toyota 2F.

When it comes to ‘Mud member demographics, I don’t know what the percentages are in terms of F-variant powered FJ40s vs Chevy powered FJ40s. Anecdotally, it seems there are way, way more forum posts about F-variant engine problems than with Chevy engines.

I would repower with a Chevy 350, and I would want to make certain the installation was done right.

Good luck with whatever route you go.

Plenty of options for Central American 40s in Mexico. Why take a really nice NAS 40 down there? I lived in Panama for a few years in the 90s and I had an '87 ex-government HJ75 I bought locally. The roads, locals and salt air destroyed it in just two years; it was a bit rough when I bought it, but it was used up when I was done with it.

A few years in Mexico and this 40 will look just like the plethora Central American 40 series we see every day for sale on BaT up here. Sure, labour is cheap and you can bondo it up with some fresh paint for pennies. But why? The Cruiser Gods don't make 40s anymore, and NAS 40s are even more rare. Think about it.
