top off seat belt ?

I have a '78 fj40 , I am in the process of taking the top off for the first time, I noticed that when the top comes off there is no place for the shoulder harness to go. There is also no place for the seat belt reel to go either. So what do you guys do for seat belts when the top is off?

The upper bolt for the shoulder harness can be moved to the stock roll bar bolt. I would just keep it there.

ok I got the upper bolt figured out, but where does the bolt for the reel go?

On my 74 I have mine on the bolt where the rollbar bolts to the tub. You might need to make up a bracket to turn it 90 degrees. I use a after market seat belt so I don't know if stock will reach.( mine only had lap belts stock)

My 78 has a place to bolt the reel on the side of the rollbar about 10 inches off the tub.

I picked up some brackets from ccot and bolted it up.
One bracket was a 90* (for the bottom) and I also picked up a 3" extention for the top part --where the belt slides through. Just gives a little extra room for comfort I thought.

Just use the lap belt. Doesn't the shoulder belt come apart from the lap portion? Mine did in my '74. The lap belt is rollover tested.

find a factory roll bar it has the mounts for seat belts

Top and bottom both attach to the factory roll bar originally. Hard to imagine what parts yours is made of without some pics. Sounds like you might have a top from an earlier year.

Ignore the extra lap-belt reel attached for the jump seat. It's not original. You can see the lower shoulder-belt reel above it though. In the bottom pic the driver's seat is sitting in the back when I was working on my tranny, in case you were wondering.

Here are the pictures. On the removable top there is a bolt hole on either side, just below the fiberglass top and 2-4 inches behind the "B" post, this is where the top direction change is bolted, on the same vertical plane at the bottom of the removable top there is a bolt hole and a smaller hole where the oreintation tab for the reel bolts into. Both of these holes are far to clean not to be factory.

My 77 FJ40 (canadian spec ) seat belts mounted to the hard top also like Delta21's do

My stock 78 also mounts the same as Delta21's...I will be changing this around in the next week or 2 when the top comes off.
