One of these days I’ll need repair the door sills and patch the front floor (again, 30 years later). The cowl has a bit of rust… and the bottom of the windshield frame.
It’s the unfortunate downside of owning the same rig for 30+ years. Especially an old Toyota on the wet coast. I suppose it I had sold it years ago and bought another I’d be doing it over again just on a different rig. Now I just have to live with any compromises I made in a former life.
I’ve messaged the seller. They are willing to develop a pre 79 version if there’s enough demand shown for it. They’re also considering a 43 version
I don’t have the money or energy to go that route at this time and I’m sure it makes more sense to keep going down the path I currently am and just fix mine.
A 43 with hardtop would be even more tempting. Stretch the frame +/- 12” and flip the rear springs and/or swap in some 60 rear leaf springs. It would be a ton of work, but so much less than starting from scratch and building a 43 from a 40. I figure the extended wheelbase and keeping the auxiliary tank would be great. As well as an extra foot of space behind the rear bench seat.
I don't know. I think if I was going to spend 10k or more on a body, I'd do aluminum.
May not look 100% stock, but parking the truck outside and not caring about the rain running through it was nice, and that's worth something.

Excellent point. There’s also something to be said for not being afraid to wheel it and scratch the paint.
I’m glad to have a reality check now and then.
An Aqualu tub would be easier and cheaper. Shipping cost is high, but fortunately for us it’s reasonably close.
Oh yeah... could you imagine a 43 on a modified 80 series frame/drivetrain...

Sometimes I wish I’d bought the rust free 60 series frame I had an opportunity to buy (30ish years ago) rather than tracking down a 40 one a year or so later when I did my frame swap to a restored one. But hindsight forgets that I didn’t have an Oxyacetylene torch for a year or so… and a stick welder for about 8 years.
Theres a fj45, fj40 and a bj60 series in Port alberni on FB market place for a package deal of just 20g

Pretty cool, and good price for that! Would be great in a Toyota pick-up or lighter 40 series.
There is a guy who put one in his LJ78 on this forum. As cool an engine as they are, IMHO, they are too small for a 5000lb LWB cruiser. The fellow had to upgrade the motor a lot to get decent power out of it, and suffers some high EGT under load as a result.
I think I'd be looking at a 3.0 litre displacement or more....
