I'm a bit confused...I've read that you shouldn't put 235/75R15 on a 5.5 rim and I've read it's fine...would I be better off with a 215/75R15 ...or 205 and let it go??

Not an issue… people go up to 10.5 width on stock rim

That’s only a 29ish x 9ish tire… if your hearing it’s not good they are just spewing the spec sheet

I bet min width is still like 6”

5.5 is stock rim… Not an issue

Too small, especially 205/75 and 215/75. Would look stupid. 33x9.50 or 33x10.50 is optimal.

Or the stock size, preferably radial like the 7.00R15 (30 inch), e.g. the Yokohama 742S, if you can still find them...

PS. Sure (slightly) bigger than the tiny 205R15, or the stock for Europe 205R16 (29 inch).

Here in Finland stock size is been 7.00-16 (31”) for BJ40 and 7.50-16LT (32”) for BJ42.

205R16 or 235/75R15 is 29”.

Correct, thank you Matti: in most European countries till 1980 the stock size for the FJ/BJ40 has been 7.50X16 (31.8 inch), mostly the non radial Dunlop Road Track Major. Top speed rating 130km/hour (80 miles).
From 1981 on the new BJ42, now with a factory 5 speed gearbox, should reduce to the smaller 205R16 (29 inch), mostly the radial Dunlop SP44J. The reason is, at least in Germany, that with the 5th gear of the new box the 7.50X16 tyre would exceed its own top speed safety limit...
It seems that in some Scandinavian countries (Denmark? see brochure) this 205R16 tyre was stock even for the BJ45 Troopies (probably Pickups too, both 4 speed only).

PS1. We have just two (2) pages of the brochure: All Land Cruisers Manuals, Factory Lit, etc. - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/all-land-cruisers-manuals-factory-lit-etc.194207/page-23
I guess there are more, if @Economist LC76 (or another Mud brother) has the full Scandinavian brochure, please upload for the community (at the above mentioned thread)!
PS2. In countries like France or Germany the 205R16 Dunlop SP44J tyre remained at least till 2001 as stock tyre for the 70-Series (HZJ78 & 79 Troopies and Pickups respectively). I miss this great tyre!

16x8JJ new oem toyota wagon wheels , pewter like a glove box door and a speedo cluster meter post 1968 - later

BFG All terrains ,

Raised White letters facing out

- your early FJ45 P/U would look nimble and hip , in my opinion ....\

- yet retain a purist based mind set approach to it's unique factory focus points fit form and function ..... :)
