Hey Guys,Looking to get your opinion and pictures. My 81 BJ42 has no lift and all original suspension components and rims.Questions:1) Will both 31"X10.5" BFG MTs fully fit and function with no rubbing on a stock 81 cruiser suspension and rims?2) Which would you recommend 31"X9.5" or 31"X10.5" considering looks, on road, off road, and snow function and why?Pictures of these tires are welcome and appreciated!

I have 30.5 x 9.5 x15 on my cruiser that's all stock and they work fine.

The 235/75/15's (30.5x9.5) are going to be closer to original spec/looks. The stock 5.5" wide rims were never really intended to have wide footprint rubber on them, but people do it and it works. TLC installs 31x10.5" BFG's on their restorations - they oughta know.

Taller tires get you a little more ground clearance and a little lower freeway RPM - good on a vehicle with no overdrive in the transmission. Shorter tires give you a touch more wheel travel on stock springs.

Go ahead and get you some 33x9.5x15's instead of 31" tires. The little extra height will be appreciated on the trail, and you'll have no clearance problems. Also, you'll get the added benefit of being able to run 60-65 mph instead of 50-55 mph before your engine starts "winding out" on the interstate highways.

For an inexpensive lift that works well and keeps your rig stock, add some anti-inversion shackles which which will give you a little extra clearance for 33" tires. (see post https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-seri...hackles-tall-skinnies-33x9-5x15-part-1-a.html)

33x10.5x15's will fit on the stock rims fine, but without a lift kit, the 10.5" tires will scrub on the rear fenders if you don't cut your fenders. (My next project will be a 2.5" lift).

The tire options for 33x9.5x15's are BFG ATs and sometimes you can find BFG mud terrains. There are many options for 10.5" wide tires, but then again, you'll have to put in a lift kit in order to keep from scrubbing your rear tires.

The 33"x9.5x15s with the shackles work well. I drove our '71 FJ40 recently at the 20th Annual Great Smoky Mountain Trail Ride, and I was honestly surprised at where we could take our "stock" vehicle. To see a bit of axle articulation, check out the pics at

PS The BFG All-Terrains performed fairly well on the trail. Remember, if you do get into DEEP mud or get stuck on some rocks, just get a tug from your buddy or use your winch. On the interstates and surface streets, the ATs drive very well.

31x10.50s fit fine on a stock cruiser using stock steel rims.

i'd go with a 10.50, the wider stance of the tire looks better in my opinion

31x10.5s may contact the inner fender lip under full articulation. For sure on anything wider than stock rims.

On stock rims you can go with 31x9.5s or even 33x9.5s with 1/4" spacers to help clear the drag link end up front.

Here's my rig on original springs and rims with some old Big-O 33x9.5s (I'm pretty sure this was before spacers too):
