I'm replacing my knock sensor and wire to mitigate the code 52 stuff. I am just a few weeks out of shoulder surgery and I was wondering if someone would give me a quick run down of the steps to remove the manifold as I am 1.5 handed right now. It seems like I should be OK with my little Makita cordless impact driver but I would not want to be yanking on something that I will later figure out was unnecessary. So far I have:
  • Removed the air intake on the driver's side.
  • Removed the four long 12mm bolts down the middle of the valley
  • misc shorty 12mm bolts holding the throttle cable, etc.
  • EGR valve on the passenger side with four 12mm nuts

There are some TORX bolts down near the throttle body. Do those come out as well?

I was kind of hoping to just move the whole assembly together with the TB off to the side a bit and get to it like that. It's a V6 BTW, but if you've read this far you probably figured that out by now.

Anyways, and insight would be appreciated.

FYI... there is a TSB out on that harness. If you can get the dealer to find it, they will replace it for free. As I understand it, it's part of the emissions system, so there is no expiration on it.

When I had the head gaskets done on a 3.0L several years ago under the campaign, I asked the dealer to bring up the TSB and check the harness, since they would be pulling the intake off anyway. The service manager argued with me, said there was no such thing. I insisted he check, eventually got the "huh... didn't know about that one". They took care of it.

UPDATE: So it turns out that there is a head gasket recall and my VIN qualified. Also, the knock sensor is part of the TSB. The dealer took the car and gave me an awesome 2010 Tacoma TRD to drive around while they work on it.

For a 20 year old car with 195k miles to qualify for a HG recall and for Toyota to still honors impresses me. Thank you KLF for the heads up.
