I think everyone with more than 130,000 miles oughtta replace the engine as a PM.

and buy the long blocks from c-dan:D

Dan,

How much is a long block again?

Something like 10k...i think

If a rebulid is not economically sound then why so much hype about how this engine can be rebuilt three times, once every 300,000 miles?

Right now the 80s are still in the down cycle on value. It wouldn't surprise me that we will see at some point a rise in resale value where rebuilding the engine is the most cost effective option.

Of course alot depends on who does the work and how much is done as to what makes finacial sense.

If I started to hear a low end rap I would do just as I've posted and drop the oil pan and roll in new mains and swap out the rod bearings. This might be a little redneck but it's all I'd do.

If it really threw a rod, and you are keeping the truck and putting a power plant in from scratch, I would go with the Chevrolet V8. If you are a doityourselfer you should be able to convert it over for 5K purchasing a crate long block V8. A buddy of mine has a 94 that spun bearing and blew a HG at 140K. He bought a 350 chevy with a 30K guarantee (5.7 not any extravagant hi-po motor) for 2K, had to find intake (throttle body) and exhaust for the V8 for 1K and spent another 2K to mate it up w/ drive train. He was able to use the toyo motor for a core. If you get a mechanic to do it you will pay a bigger penny, but you will have a reliable and powerful motor, and parts are easy to come by and inexpensive. If my reliable 3FE ever has a major malfunction and I was keeping the truck, that is the way I would go.....

i vote go with a v8

I have a Chevy V8-5.7L in a 93 Chevy van I've had since new. The transmission wont go into third gear but the engine is fine. NM plates but passed CA smog and about 130,000 miles. 100 miles from LA or San Diego and I'd take $500. Van is luxury traveler with fitted four captains chairs and a fold down bed. Would be a great engine for a Cruiser.

My guess is not a rod, but possiable piston slap(cylinder wall is badly scored and wearing the rings and piston skirt, cylinder wall), created by a plug injector or a lean miss as you were climbing the hill. I currenly can not help. Unless you put energy into this your self, a swap will not be cheaper than a rebuild. I have not seen or heard of any one loosing a bottom end bearing on a stock 1fz with out loosing all your oil pressure. So if you lost oill pressure then a bearing may be the problem, if no loss of pressure then a bad hole as described above. Good luck robbie
