Another reason that made for a difficult decision was that he might become too popular. They would have to poison him from the start and establish a clear expiration date.
We know how popular he was with everyday democrats and Hollywood celebrities, but most importantly, he had earned the respect of and was revered by the most influential people on the planet:

I realize I'm losing everyone here and you're looking for a reason to be outraged or to bail, but keep the big picture in mind. I'm just showing you how the sausage is made.
All of the Bushes, All of the Clintons, Both Obamas, All of the B!dens, All of the Trumph's, even China - are all in on "it", whatever “it” is. They are all heroes and professionals that know how to do a job, no questions asked, no matter the personal cost. Nobody is the bad guy except for this Geoff guy, of relentless.com. The Pharmaceutical Salesman and the Rocket Scientist (maybe) work for the shadow gov't and are developing a Toyota-based secret weapon with help from Alien Technology that will be revealed in due time.
