I got an Engel 42 with a cover and a rolling tray.

Well, the tray comes with some lock-down screw brackets and when the cover is on, you cannot clamp it down.
There are no holes that I can find in the cover. Am I missing something?
Do you have to cut holes in the cover? Seems odd.

Are you talking about the turnbuckles? If so, below where the handles slip through the cover there are two slits that are stiched. Cut the stitching, remove the handles, attach the bent tabs where the handle went, and attach the turnbuckle to that.

how old is the cover?

if it's a newer one, I can assure you that there are holes -- right where Cory says.

Don't know about older covers.

I just bought it, brand new and there are absolutely NO slots like that.
Starting to get a little grumpy about this.
Swear to God, if there is one f*cked up item in a bunch, I will get it.
You would think that if you place your order for the fridge with the slide and the cover, they would give you the right stuff.
Even if you took the handle off, which would be stupid because you need them for lifting the damn thing, and flipped the brackets up to come through the main handle slit, then the turnbuckles are too short anyway. I checked that option.
Going back to my vendor and he will make it right, I am sure.
Just a waste of time.

Been looking into this all morning Jeb. According to Engel, they no longer have the stitching for the cut, they said it was because very few customers actually use the slide and either way you had to make your own cut. He did say that it should have a slight "pen" mark from the factory, but it is best to just measure and lay it out yourself. According to them they havn't had any issues with fraying, etc around the cut?

I suppose if you were truly worried about the fraying, you could either use a cloth style iron on patch?? Or take it to a commercial sewing shop?? I truly wish they would have just continued with the stitch as I am in the same boat with my cover now.

I just verified this with all the other Engel stuff (new within the last month) that I have here, none of them have the stiching like the old units???

Not the best news but at least we know where we stand on yours and all future Engel covers...

huh...well, I never got a survey from Engel asking me if I ever used the slot for anything...

like...WTF?

Just a note to all on this:

I purposefully did not mention who my vendor was because I realized it was not his fault and did not want to get his name on Engel's mistake (which was not a mistake after all), but since he let the cat out of the bag, Kurt at Cruiser outfitters went out of his way to make it right, with this and another issue with the shipping of the unit itself.

He acted promptly and DID correct the issue and/or answer my questions and concerns.

He will definitely get my return business.

Now...off to cut holes in my fridge cover!

Agreed ;)

According to Paul (EngelUSA Rep), they sell very few slides in comparison to the coolers. And at that, some either don't run a cover or go with a different brand (ARB for example uses their own covers for the Sawafuji unit).

I'm going to look into a local sewing shop here in town, and see what they think.. I've had them sew all sorts of projects (seatbelts, etc) and they make alot of custom bags, covers, etc. I don't think it would be too hard to add.

Another local was dealing with the same issue, he used a cloth patch as I described earlier. He found some cheap iron-on patch material at the K-Mart, and cut a couple of clean looking "reinforcements" for the unit. Could be an easy option.

Question for those that have the stiching, what is it like on the back? Same?

Thanks again for all your patience and understanding Jeb

Yes. Same on front and back.

Figured as much, I seem to remember that. However the stack of covers I have here have nothing. I can't imagine it takes them more than a couple seconds to sew while in the factory?? Couple penny's here, couple penny's there... whats next, they won't include handles ;)

I got a brand new razor blade, cut very small slits underneathe the pocket flap, slipped the hooks up there and tightened it down. You cannot even see the slits and the turn-buckles just disapear under the pocket flap...looking good.

The back slits are not under a flap but what the hell, they are in the back. ;)

Good to hear!

I used "Just Straps" Fridge straps to hold my Engel to my slide. They just loop around the handles. Didn't have to modify my cover at all. They probably aren't as secure as turnbuckles but I've had no problems with them or the fridge in about 100,000km of use including lots of pounding over corrugated outback roads and hardcore wheeling. "Just Straps" probably wouldn't be available over there but I'm sure somebody could make something similar.

Any pics?? I'm personally not familiar with the Just Straps stuff...

so...they look like the ratchet straps I use.
