88 truck, but that seems to be irrelevant.

but it is a 22RE

its like this truck is a frankenstien of parts that dont exist.

only thing i can figure is it is using parts of an early celica, or its a concoction of JDM parts.

this is what i do know:

the block is a 22R with NO lazer stamp

it has 88+ injection stuff on it

the head has pear exhaust ports, (has air suction pipes)

this is where it gets weird:

it has dual row timing chain

it has steel guides on both sides

the valve cover has a hole bored thru it from that, its a newer style cover

it has the fuel pump lobe on the cam, but the head is blocked off

the timing cover is taller than the 22RE covers of 88 vintage

the timing cover once was on a single row chain, i can see were it was worn in.

the water pump mount is the strait across one, like the 20R's, not with the bend on top like the REs.

the cover says aisin in a very old looking font, i have never seen before.
on the hubs for example where it says aisin is the font were used to seeing on every thing.

but this font has small skinny letters all paced far apart, whereas what we usually see is bold letters close together

there is a TEQ stamp on the cover

above and to the passenger side of the oil pump is two large circular convex dimples, where as the covers im used to are smooth.

the block has the oil plug boss at the drivers side rear like most 22Rs do. (not sure that means anything important)

but this part does mean somthing, the damn knock sensor is threaded into the block just next to the water bypass pipe that goes to the manifold, across from the air suction reed valve

i just dont get what the hell this engine is.

i need to know what year and out of what im dealing with.

i do know, based on a semi-recent thread here that in 84 the 2 wheelers had the RE in em

normally nothin stumps me, but this has

KLF i am aware of the deck height differences but i dont know the specs, dont you have all that info?

Hmm that's a good one... The head has to match the dual row timing chain as does the timing cover... so that's makes it sound like the block, head and timing cover are all early... The injectors wouldn't plug and play between 84 injectors and 88 wiring, so they probably swapped that stuff onto it? OOOOOOOOOORRR!......

21-RE? :D

22R ............+E :flipoff2:

It would make sense if it was a 83 or 84 Celica engine that they would just block off the fuel pump with a plate.... maybe was single chain OE and converted "back" to dual?

Toyota in house experiment engine? :hillbilly:

Anyway to get tell the year of the block from the casting numbers?

Jerod beat me to the reply, I've done a couple of those conversions. Both involved a Celica, my old 80 GT 5-speed special edition hatchback, and a friends 81 coupe. I didn't even get past Wristy's "..double row chain" before I had a Celica pictured in my head.

FWIW I still prefer the 22RE-T. Find one and just throw it in instead and make future repairs a lot easier.

Pics, if nothing more than reminiscing? :D

If you need a good source of info for this type of stuff, use the JNC and T.O.R.C. forums. Both are populated with great techs and enthusiasts.

What the deuce?
I thought you were joking.....have you ever seen one?

Well it was a joke of sorts... :D I've never seen one in person, I did see one on TV though. It was in a 4Runner in Africa, and it had the 21R-U...

The one we had was via our JDM importer. At the time it was a desired deal because of the lessened amount of smog and vacuum equipment and actually ran stronger and cleaner.

You could also possibly be looking at a "T-Series", a 2 or a 3, ie: Autospeed Article Archive

From the late ‘70s to the late ‘80s, Toyota produced a new generation 2-litre 21R engine. In its most strangled guise (the ‘80s Californian-spec 21R-C), this engine struggles to generate 67kW. Other versions, the 21R and 21R-U, make around 78kW. It appears that all versions of the 21R use a single downdraught carb. Bigger still is the 20R engine used between the mid 1970s and 1980. The 20R engine (essentially a stroked 18R) sweeps 2.2-litres but, unfortunately, the most powerful version can muster a lowly 72kW. The original 18R-G (with its smaller capacity) is f-a-r more desirable. The 20R engine is most commonly found in the boxy style Corona and Celica.

I guess my being a "Ricer" at the time paid off somehow because it was a Filipino budy who showed me the option and mentioned it being a "C.A.R.B. legal swap" at the time.

There's no way we're talking about a T series engine... Wristy knows a bit more than that.

Hey now, it's entirely :censor: possible and at least I posted a pic! He didn't!! :flipoff2:

So, Wristy, "Pics or it didn't happen?!"

*I should be kissing his butt though, Lil'Bro's trouble light came back on again, after doing the EGR therm sensor and a little vac line redo...

We love ya Wristy, and I fully expect some jibs out of left field from you in time as payback. ;)
