Was out playing in my 88 runner with 33s, backing up out of a small tiny ditch and I heard a metalic pop sound like it popped out of gear then continued to back uup.

While driving down the road it was making a weird noise, then stopped. When I back up it makes a strange sound, then when I go forward it starts bucking and poping until I shift into 4 wheel and back to 2 wheel then it stops?

I was thinking something with the automatic hubs?

When backing up in 2wd it starts popping and hopping, move farward it gets worse until I shift it into 4wd then back to 2wd?

Front ring gear and pinion in the IFS diff, possibly 1 or 2 teeth in the rear.

All good ideas, but why does it happen in reverse 2wd, not in 4wd and it clears up when I shift into 4wd then back to 2wd. :hhmm:

Mmmmmm auto hubs might be a good place to start... Can you echo locate the noise? Front/rear/left/right?

Ding ding, its the left front side. I will open them up today...:hhmm:

I have a dollar that says the bits inside you auto hub are all ground up into junk... :D Good luck!

Talking money eh? Might be time for a visit to the old head shrink.

now is a great time to switch to manuals!

Not that any of us here would ever consider exerting influence or peer pressure on you in any way, shape or form?
