Was out playing in my 88 runner with 33s, backing up out of a small tiny ditch and I heard a metalic pop sound like it popped out of gear then continued to back uup.

While driving down the road it was making a weird noise, then stopped. When I back up it makes a strange sound, then when I go forward it starts bucking and poping until I shift into 4 wheel and back to 2 wheel then it stops?

When backing up in 2wd it starts popping and hopping, move farward it gets worse until I shift it into 4wd then back to 2wd?

Front ring gear and pinion in the IFS diff, possibly 1 or 2 teeth in the rear.

Dang, i was going to go simple and say check your CV joints.

All good ideas, but why does it happen in reverse 2wd, not in 4wd and it clears up when I shift into 4wd then back to 2wd.
