Thinking of lining my flares myself, what say you?

Doug, other than the possibility of ripping them off on the Rubicon, do you ever wish you would have left the fenders on? Same question to all those that are flareless.

Don't try to remove the paint

Don't need to remove the paint, just scuff the shine off with sandpaper.

Not really, I think the look gives it a more unique stance.

:D

I try to keep away from the meaner rocks. So far I've been lucky...most of my scrapes are underneath. The white hides scratches real well ;)

CJ - I don't have any regrets about having taken them off. The only problem I could see anyone having is possibly from Officer Friendly. In some areas it's not kosher to have your tires sticking outside (beyond) of the sides of the vehicle body.

Even with 315s, my tires don't stick out very far -- maybe 3/4" to 1". Mine's been this way for a year -- no hassles yet.

The only other thing I can think of is that, depending on the brand of liner you use, the black might fade some. Mine was shot with a coat of semi-gloss clear afterward, but it still faded. If you're a stickler darker black, some Armor-all type stuff will make it darker again for a couple months.

Sorry to say that looks terrible. What an aweful thing to do to a Landcruiser!!!

I think the flareless look looks right. I see them all day long here, the base model 80 in Australia came flareless (and with rear doors hinged at the sides). They look much more "athletic" in their stance.

Gotta have the flares without them they look too skinny especially with a lift done

Just a little background. . . . .

I was a "80's look best with flares" kinda guy. Well, i let my sister drive a little at URE one weekend and she managed to back onto a rock just enough to rip the left rear flare off. When i removed it, i noticed the mounting brackets built into the flare were broke. Also, the weather stripping on the other flares was rotting. So i ordered new weather stripping and started removing the other flares. Several other flare's mounting bracketry broke during the process. So. . . . i decided that i was going to be flareless. Even though i think the trucks look more meaty with the flares on, in the long run it was cheaper for me to run naked.

I have some good 3m clearcoat. I may hit the herculiner with a light coat just to keep it from fading.

I think the flares make the LC look like a pregnant hippo, and I'm looking at different ways of ditching mine right now. I've grown tired of the Jeepified fender-flare look all the manufacturers are using anymore to make their junk look "off-road".

Aussie, the main problem is that any LC that was equipped with flares from the factory mounts them with holes through the body and not adhesive. When you remove the flares, you've got to figure out what to do with the holes. Alot of people address this by using the rhino-line like material to cover the holes while simultaniously protecting the fenders from the rocks that the tires will throw up.

Brother Brian's '97 has the John Deere flareless look going on. :D

i say do it i love the look of flarless with line-x in place hope to someday do it when the need arises till then money has other places to go

I think you'd get more control with the roller vs. sprayer. With the sprayer, the stuff goes everywhere. If you only have a small area to cover, just roll the goo on.

Durabak is one of my clients, they have a new product, and it’s called "Smooth Durabak". Basically it is the liner material with out all the texture stuff. I have seen some samples and it looks like thick rubber paint. I believe this will be ideal on the outside of vehicles. I know one of the editors of 4Wheel & Off-road sprayed a complete rig with it. Don’t know how it turned out. I will have him e-mail me some pictures. Unfortunately I cannot post them, (you will have to wait and see the article in 4Wheel & off-road) but I will get an idea of how it turned out and let you all know. This product is currently available through www.durabakcompany.com.

Cool! Durabak even has an FJ40 in their ad.

I notice that some of the applications have a "UV" beside the color. I'm assuming this means they have a UV protection chemical in them to keep the color from fading?

Now i just need to decide if i'm using black or dark grey on my glorious green cruiser.
