Why am I satisfied with the cheapest White zinfandel I can find...(I can accept it if the answer is due to my whitetrashiness).

White Zinfandel is extremely cheap to make anyway. Zinfandel is the most widely grown grape in CA so there is an ocean of it. Most white zinfandel producers buy the same grapes on the bulk market from the same suppliers. Price is at the discretion of the winery. The sweetness of the wine covers up any odd nuances or flavors you might find at the lower price range.

BTW, you aren't that white-trashy...

i just picked up Three cases of wine...

case BV Reserve Tapestry
case BV Reserve Dulcet
case BV Reserve Silver Oak Cabernet 1997 Napa Valley

you wont believe what i paid for these......cheap cheap

Yipee....That is the nicest thing anyone has said to me all week.

Thanks!

Hey J, you got any comment on these guys?

Not much of a wine drinker myself, but I do enjoy the rum they make. We did a tour last year, and tasted a bunch of wines it was good, compared the 'store brand' stuff to theirs... still not sure whats better.

I do know those guys. Their liquor is great. The wine is dismal. They buy the wine from Prosser, WA. The reds sell for $20 but I wouldn't pay more than $7 for it. It's definitely more of a souvenir. If it was good it would be at all the Nantucket restaurants and it just isn't. The beers are excellent and the vodka is very good stuff. They are doing a limited edition bourbon that will be ready in a year or two. Dying to try that stuff.

The older vintages of Tapestry are amazing. I think they changed it up recently to a cheaper wine just a couple years ago. BV's cheap wines (coastal appelation) are junk. The high end reserve stuff like the tapestry and the dulcet are great.

The 1997 should be worth some $$$$! If you open one I'd love to hear how it's holding up and how it tastes. Great score on all those cases. Did you get them from a store or from a private sale??

I only drink beer so by default I'm bigger white trash.

Recently I drink more beer than wine. After drinking wine for 10 years straight I burned out a bit and switched back to beer. Having a keg-o-rator with a 1/2 bbl of Bud sitting 5 feet from my couch might have something to do with it.

I have 6 tattoos so i think I have everyone beat in the WT dept.

The wine was chosen before the food. They were gourmet ham sandwiches. :D

Not knocking the food but it just seemed strange for such an extravagant bottle to go with a ham sandwich. :) I've had insanely expensive wines with cheeseburgers so I can't talk.

The saltiness in the ham I bet went very well with the Zin.

I find myself going in cycles between wine and beer. I'm at the end of a beer cycle getting ready for a wine cycle. Maybe it's the weather.

They buy the wine? are you sure? I think they buy at least some of the fruit and make it in their barn. I think it may have gotten better because from what I have seen more of the resturants are selling it.

The Rum is excellent and the Vodka is great too. love the cranberry.

My tastes definitely change with the seasons. I'm heading into bourbon season now. Beer season is in full swing. Red wines will kick back in after football season.

I'm a big fan of the Cardinal Zin, too. Another Zin that I like a lot is the Jack London Zinfandel from Kenwood. It was one of the vineyards we visited on our NorCal vacation a couple years back.

Good stuff:

Barb and I stayed at a B&B right across the street from Kenwood a few years back. I love Sonoma. If you like zin, I highly recommend Cline. The base zin is only about $8-$10 and it is everything a zin should be.

The back of the bottles say that the grapes are from prosser, wa. The winery people will tell you that they buy it all from there. I believe they do some either fermentation or ageing in the barn and they definitely bottle their own stuff. I think they have some grapevines there but they are for show. nantucket doesn't have the best grape growing conditions for popular grapes. I'm sure the wines have improved as they go through each vintage.

Actually, the Montebello is a cab blend. It did work very well as the spice of the wine complemented the spice of the ham.

You're right. Forgot about that since it is a big Zin producer. Either way I'm jealous.

Cline makes great stuff. The started the "red Truck" label and just sold it off recently. They've been around a long time. The Seghesio one I mentioned is a bit tougher to find but gets 90+ points from WS every year and is always in the top 100 best wine list. It's generally about $12.
