The ultimate spawn of anger.....

Also wanted to add that the clearances around the seal look exactly like dmaddox.

my local glass shop was able to cut me a new laminated safety glass windshield and make a new gasket from the stuff they get by the roll for various types of windows and it turned out great. no leaks and no silicone and only costed me 80 bucks for all installed etc.

first time i did the windshield i re used the gasket and original glass and man was it ever a PITA glass guys can do it for me every time from now on

Excellent write up. What's that old saying about persistance?

I have been folllowing your build in the FJ45 section. If you guys have not read the story behind this truck you should, it's just too cool...

You give me hope for the day I tackle this job. I guess the OEM WS is available for my 71 though so should not be so bad... ;)

Thanks bro!

Well I assume that my w/s frame is the same as an FJ25, beings that most parts for 58-64 are listed the same.

With that being said, the part number from the 25 section is:
56121-60011
56122-60011 - lock strip.

I called Toyota this morning....still available. WTF? So uh....yeah it's 40bucks with the TLCA discount. Maybe I should have went with OEM /slap

Oh well. I may snag one from Toyota just to have for a future job, or whenever I need to replace this one.

Later dudes,

Dallas

Im looking for a third windshield at this point because of those fxxxing gaskets. First one got punched out of pure anger and frustration. The second cracked when being pulled from the donor frame.

I too have done everything else on my 40 and will just have to suck it up and pay to have one cut and installed.

x2 on what Greencruiser said about the local shops.

My 64 FJ45swb with new glass and good fitting rubber was $145 installed (18 months ago).

I had taken the old W/S down so they could cut another from the shape and they came out and installed it in about an hour. No F bombs, not that my garage is a virgin by any means, just not on this project.

FWIW, the shop guy was saying that my W/S was smaller than other FJ40's he'd cut. I never pulled out the tape and measured, but it may be why they are hard to fit with FJ40 kits.

Otherwise, it's looking really good Dallas. Now you're going to be afraid to drive it hard;)

Thank you for the link and tips. I am not looking forward to installing that key :-(

I'll update soon.

Dallas

With a Key way tool Installing the Key is the EZ part I ending up cutting the Key to length + 1" and working It in with glass cleaner

The bitch was installing the OEM gasket on the glass and trying to fit into the frame It took three of us two who were glazers and I payed these guy's too.
they still had trouble until I lent a hand
The one guy said I had bought the wrong gasket at one point until I showed him the Toyota bag It came in :hhmm:

We tried the rope trick three times and failed

good luck was not EZ with OEM gaskets ether.

That seal is common to a lot of older cars including land rovers with the fixed glass tops and so forth. Typically not molded. The seal is 1.50 per foot. It must have SUCKED with those popsicle sticks. The correct lock strip installation tool makes it a breeze:

Really hate winshields too...last time I tried working with one I had the same headaches (not a SOR gasket) and accidentally cracked it.

My new solution? Bring winshield frame only to auto glass shop. I had a new custom cut flat safety glass winshield (I don't need the friggen TEQ symbol on my glass) and a new weatherstrip installed (from whatever weatherstripping they had in stock). One hour later and a check for $85 and it was done w/ no headaches, cursing, or leaks.

Some things are better left to those who do it for a living...
That's the way I do it.
