We went right by Area 51, which is Pahrump, right. We saw the little alien museum.
Area 51 is further north near Tonopah, where the Stealth fighters were originally stationed.

Pahrump is where the Martians landed in the movie, Mars Attacks, a hilariously silly movie.

Great trip!

See Tim Hill just outside of Tucson as you’re coming back. Great old guy with tons of FJ parts. You can usually find his ads on CL. He’s actually in Marana.

All set up at the KOA in Coleville. Incredibly peaceful. And, I’ve got a good cook!!

Man, what a day. I have never seen such contrasts in scenery or roads like I did today. To go from the bright lights of Vegas to Death Valley/Badlands, to Inyo National Forest—also got to see a beautiful river. At times, elevation below sea level (Badlands) to over 7000 ft on the mountains.

I have driven some pretty hairy roads (Wolf Creek Pass during a major snow storm) but 190 through Death Valley National Park with its 9% downhill grades combined with very winding roads that go on for miles is a real double black diamond—pucker factor 10. I should have known something was up when we created the mountain and there was a large brake check area on the side of the road with a lot of people out of the vehicles checking their brakes.

The bottom 2 pics are in Death Valley. We had to hike up to a view point—you can see our “tiny” truck WAY down there. That was a hot hike.

Their planned route takes them north thru SLC. Nothing in AZ much less Southern Arizona. Tim has far less than he did in the nineties. I'm old and he is even older. Think he os just doing it to have something to do.

Today is the day the 45 jumps on board. Just arrived in Redding. The term for today is “heat stroke”, namely how to avoid it. It is 106 here. Man, I thought Phoenix was hot. We put off pick up until 6 or so tonight so we don’t get vaporized—okay, I’m being a little dramatic but damn...it’s hot. My skin and the sun don’t make good bedfellows.

It was another day beautiful landscapes. We took the from Coleville to Redding. Took the 89 to the 50 into Sacramento. Incredible views. Kind of silly but my son and I were both impressed with the pine cones all over the place—we just had to stop and pick some of them up.

BTW, if you are ever in Redding, go eat at the Black Bear Diner—you won’t be disappointed!!

So quick story—mainly telling because one day, when my son is reading through this thread years from now, he can have this little nugget. And, it’s pretty damn funny.

My son is blessed in spades with wit and dry humor. This is a perfect example...

Me: It is nice to be able to hang out with somebody for as long as we have and not get tired of them. Like your Mom and I can hang out for days and not get annoyed with each other.

Mason: Oh...that’s nice. I was annoyed with you by the time we left San Antonio.

After a pause of second or two he started laughing.

His response was as quick as saying “hello” back to somebody who has just said “hello” to you.

He was kidding...at least I think he was ;-b. I can be quite the rascal.

Speaking of Phoenix in an earlier post, we had to make a quick stop. I did my residency out there at the Mayo Clinic and it is where my wife and I started our family. My son was a mere 3 months old when we moved to San Antonio to get closer to family. I wanted him to see his first house. Crazy to think, last time I saw this house I was pulling away with a trailer approx 14 years ago.

I planted just about everything in that yard. Great to see how well taken care of it is.

Man, I miss that house...or maybe I miss how young my kids were when we lived there.

What an great experience. And a helluva score . I’m glad to hear you are bringing her back to SA. I look forward to seeing her in person. Cheers!

She worked in California, she's retiring in Texas. We gotta meet up, I'd love for you to see her.

I thought you were picking up a LPB? That looks like a short bed to me.

I think the pictures are deceiving. I'll take some straight on side shots. I certainly could be wrong--I have a lot to learn. Education starts tomorrow. I get to meet up with @kevos37 and @whitey45--I am extremely fortunate to be in their neck of the woods with the truck in tow.
