Just scored this. Clean title, no accidents, needs baseline. Hope to connect with ONSLC at the Carolina Relic Run in April.

Raleigh RTP area.

Cleared the Christmas lights, now to see why the oil pressure gauge is bottomed out. Runs strong….but next step is to check oil pressure.

same problem I'm facing at the moment. First thing to test is the operation of your gauge and sender. When earthing the connector to the sender for the gauge, I rigged up a 5w parking globe in series, even though the FSM says 3.4w—close enough. Some have even earthed it directly, but be careful as you can peg the gauge and have it jump off track.. If you earth it directly, have someone watch the gauge and disconnect before it tops out. If the needle sweeps from L to H then your gauge is fine. Next move to testing the sender, and then manually checking oil pressure with external mechanical gauge if first 2 fail.

Took a measure of the oil pressure by tapping through the oil pressure gauge port. Took idle reading at running temp then another reading at 3000 rpm. Looks good to me. I’ll replace oil pressure gauge.

That tab on the oil pressure gauge gets rusty or corroded. Mine fell off when I was rebuilding my engine. You could try cleaning the tab but if that doesn't work, replace it. However be aware it could be an upstream problem. My subharness for the oil pressure gauge was also corroded and had to be replaced.

I just went through this. New pressure sender solved the issue. Mine had failed with only 150,000kms on it. Very very easy job, 10 mins tops. Just remember to put a dab of Loctite 243 (blue) on 2-3 of the middle threads before winding it back in. Don't go crazy tightening either, risky with brass/alum.

Agree, just glad actual oil pressure is fine.

on my slow crawl to baselining this, I noticed a small coolant leak. No over heating tho. After getting under it, I noticed that one of the bolts on the water outlet housing was backed off. In order to get to that bolt I had to remove the alternator and bracket to fit a socket. I tried to tightened it but was already at 15 lbft. Took out the bolt to make sure that previous owner had not stripped it. It was actually bottomed out, so switched it for a slightly shorter bolt. No more leaking.

Now you may ask, where did the shorter bolt come from. Well it came from the air intake chamber. My wife who loves puzzles pointed out that two of the bolts that fasten the chamber did not match. One was shorter that the other. So I swapped them out.

Now the reason I am posting this is because the PO told me that he had the head gasket replaced by his mechanic that works on his semi trailers but could not produce any proof. I bought it from him at a very good price but not really knowing if the HG had been replaced was true or not. It runs great and compression is good, doesn’t burn or leak oil, coolant is clean, and temps are normal. But there is maybe some evidence that intake manifold, and now that the air intake chamber may have been removed. Question is, how can I tell if the HG was replaced….that would be such a bonus.

Only a bonus If it was done correctly, but if it’s not swapping fluids just send it till it does. Great find I need to find another 80 I don’t plan on thrashing. Gotta find someone who doesn’t think a 30 year old vehicle is worth the price of a new KIA 🤣

@LockedCollector
Curious, was your oil pressure gauge not reading at all, or just reading low as shown in post 4?
